A true golfer’s paradise!

All year round courses

Mexico’s 8,000 Kilometres of pristine beach, desert, mountainous and tropical backdrops make for endless golfing options. The sport is rapidly gaining momentum and attracting international visitors from mixed genders and handicap levels to its multitude of ‘all year round’ courses.

Besides being the number one choice for North American amateur/pro and celebrity golfers, Mexico’s high quality and varied designer courses have rapidly pushed the nation into the international golfing spotlight. Its recently gained IAGTO recognition as ‘Golf Destination of the Year in Latin America’ as well as the rising celebrity status of Mexico’s female golf champion Lorena Ochoa, have helped legitimize the nations status as a world class golfing destination.

Now spreading rapidly, the Mexican golf virus has captivated the attention of the worlds top golfing names such as Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Robert Trent Jones Junior who play and have designed courses in the following 3 regions:

Aerial of Lovers Beach

Los Cabos:

Until recently the Baja California Peninsula was a well kept Mexican and American secret. Now with assistance from the government the area has managed to keep its tourist intake controlled and to a high standard not allowing mass tourism to invade its shores. This has triggered various big ‘golfing’ names to move in and design some of the best ocean-side courses on the planet. Imagine Cacti decorated desert on one side and the magnificent deep blue Pacific Ocean on the other.

Puerto Vallarta/ Nuevo Vallarta:

The Bay of Banderas is home to these two fantastic tourist destinations. The bay, the largest in Mexico, benefits from being protected from all sides by mountains and rain forest, giving the visitor a multitude of options and incredible panoramic views and sunsets. Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco State) is the original port of the bay, and still hosts an important marina and town centre, while Nuevo Vallarta (Nayarit State) is a newer destination, benefiting from miles of pristine coastline with top quality infrastructure and facilities. These two destinations are home to a variety of golfing options.

Cancun & Riviera Maya:

Last but definitely not least, is the beautiful Mexican Caribbean!

The world class courses and infrastructure available in this region are second to none, the turquoise waters, jungle backdrops combined with its white coral sand beaches have gained such attention in the golfing industry that last year Cancun not only won IAGTO’s coveted ‘Destination of the year, Latin America & Caribbean’ award, but was also chosen to host the International Golf Travel Market’s 10 year anniversary. The new eco-friendly mentality of this region which includes the historically rich Mayan Riviera stretch is attracting golf enthusiasts and their families who can benefit from the variety of other vacationing options available due to the areas cultural and natural richness.

Mrs Geldap has bought me a belated 40th Birthday pressie of a golf trip to Mauritius (no she isn't loaded - I work for an airline and have a mate out there to stay with so its reasonable). Going out there on Sunday with a mate and will be playing 3-4 rounds of Golf at Le Touessrok, Belle Mare Plage legends course and links course. I have played Le touessrok last year, awesome course, but have not played Belle Mare Plage. Anyone played it and what did you think? hat are the greens like etc and is it a go for it type course of do you need to play conservatively? Thanks in advance.

Hi Geldap,

Lucky you, there are 2 golf courses at Belle Mare and I think they are one of the best over the island.

The Legend is the most difficult, you have water on 17 holes. Huge greens.

It's a very tactical course... but so nice (bring a lot of balls.)

The links is easier with a lot of blind tee off. Very enjoyable as well.

Belle Mare is an excellent course(s), the legend is a little quirky and very difficult the first time you play it.  Be conservative and you will be rewarded, many of the par 4's only require a 3/5 wood off the T.  You may want to check that you can actually play the Legend as you usually have to be staying at the Hotel to get on.

Hi, lucky !!  didnt say when your going so might be to late.

We were there in Nov 07, for 2 weeks, two really great courses.

Legends is walking, buggy 32 euros or local caddy £4ish (recommended to read the greens LOL) i think its hotel guests only, but not 100% sure.

Links is buggy only 16 euros per person, open to all, dont know of green fees.

As the others have said, Legends is short, but  tricky, greens are grainey but great condition,  hitting the fairways is a must on most holes as the surrouding areas are real ball eaters. I lost 4 balls in the 1st nine holes, and played with a couple who must had got through 2 dozen in the round.

However  dont let it put you off, the more you play it and the easier it becomes and i managed to shoot under my hc by the end of holiday. As i said a caddy is money well spent. There are no course planners, which is a pity.

Links is totally different, wide fairways but more undulating and IMO easier, and in some respects i enjoyed it more here, than the legends, although still needs respect. Greens probably not up to legends standard, but still good.

I will certainly be going back

Enjoy

Andy

Thanks - well in the end we played the links course but not the legends. They were going to let us play but the buggy fees were quite ridiculous at 25 Euros EACH so we did not bother. Enjoyed the links course - greens were superb and very very fast but got within a couple of my hcap. Le Touessrok was awesome, condition is fantastic although the greens were very true they were also on the slow side so made the round very enjoyable as it gave you a chance to score well. We had a great find though, a course called Tamarina on the west coast near Flic en Flac. Fantastic course under the mountains and weighing in at some 7500 yards from the tips it was a great challenge with some great holes. It was my second favourite to Le Touessrok but best was the price - 30 Euros a round + 11 Euros for the buggy each. Great Value compare to the Belle Mare courses (95 Euros inc buggy for the links or 110 Euros inc buggy for the legends course) Got a deal at Le Touessrok for 115 Euros each including Buggy - normal price is 160 Euros. I thought it was good considering it is ranked as the 10th best course in the world !!
