Open champion Louis Oosthuizen is considered as a strong candidate for next month’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which is the third of four World Golf Championship events this year.
The golf betting industry took a huge loss for those who placed their bets in favour of Oosthuizen, especially considering that he went from the 54th position to 15th in the Official World Golf Ranking, and that he could be starting what is shaping up to be a great career in the sport.
The South African player is going through a good time, after spending almost eight years as a professional golfer without achieving any significant success.
Furthermore, Oosthuizen also had a good performance in the Scandinavian Masters in Stockholm. He had a good start and earned fourth place along with Brett Rumford and Mark Brown.
But maybe we shouldn’t expect that much, considering that this will be the first participation of Oosthuizen at Bridgestone, in which he will meet again with the tournament favourite, Tiger Woods.
For his part, Woods will come to this tournament as the biggest favourite to achieve the victory, even after finishing in 23rd at St. Andrew's and after having failed in his attempt to win the US Open.
However, after four surgeries on his left knee and the scandals in his personal life, it is hard to believe that Woods will return to the good level of play that he had or that he will be able to exceed the record of 18 Majors.
So far, Woods has managed to keep one more week as leader of the official World Golf Championship, but Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood are very close behind.
Also, we can’t forget that Woods achieved his last victory in a Major at the 2008 US Open and since then he has made seven starts in Majors. This is why I believe things are getting tougher for the world number one.
Finally, despite the favouritism surrounding Woods, we could expect big surprises, or could expect that Oosthuizen will repeat the outstanding performance he had in the Open Championship.
