’Mizuno
Mizuno MX-23 – Magic irons

When we asked the visitors of Golfmagic.com to nominate the equipment they most wanted to attribute a ‘Magic’ tag to - we weren’t prepared for the fantastic response.

Over a one month period we asked you to nominate the clubs, balls, waterproofs, shoes and trolleys that most attracted your attention and you aspired to own.

We also asked for you to nominate the best innovation of the past two years, the high street stores and online retailers you rate highest for price and customer service and finally to tell us which European Tour golfer you most admired during 2005.

In total we received over 10,000 votes from the most discerning golfers in Europe – an astonishing response for which we are very grateful.

Votes were cast in 15 categories in which we gave you a handful of options and also gave you the choice to nominate an alternative if your particular favourite wasn’t listed. Many of you did - but overall we found the nominations were just about spot on.

TaylorMade
r7 Quad driver

So who were the winners?

In the drivers category it was quite conclusive with the Ram FX9 (38.5%) taking the top award in the category for those priced under £150, ahead of the Benross V12 (34.1%). In the premium driver class 25.9 per-cent plumped for the TaylorMade r7 Quad, comfortably clear of the Ping G5 and King Cobra SZ440.

The r7 also receives the award as the Magic Innovation of 2005, ahead of the London Golf Show and MyJoys personalised shoes.

For Mizuno, the awards proved a clean sweep in the irons section. Their MX-17s polled a staggering 59.3 per-cent of the vote in the ‘Magic Irons under £350’ category, while the MX-23s (25.5%) edged out Ping G5s (24.1%) in the premium category.

Commented Mizuno’s marketing director, David Matthews: "Regulars will know that Mizuno has always watched and read the Golfmagic forums - always interesting and nearly always useful. And one topic the members have always been passionate about is the speed and regularity with which manufacturers change their models. So it's rewarding to make the point that the MX-23 is a Golfmagic winner, despite being nearly three years old."

"I can remember when the forum had a very mixed reaction when Mizuno introduced the MX-23 as a successor to the MX-20. I'm sure that the MX-23 owners will be just as upset when the MX-23 is finally updated," he added.

’Titleist
Magic ball – Titleist ProV1

"It's difficult to improve on really good equipment. It’s even harder to make people believe you've managed it. We'll keep watching the site and we thank everyone that voted. The Mizuno research and development team are genuinely thrilled."

Acushnet recorded the top two positions for its Titleist Pro V1 and NXT balls, and claimed top spot among the wedges with its Vokey 200 by Titleist series and for its FootJoy DryJoys shoes.

"We are delighted to hear that our products have been chosen as category winners in the first ever Golfmagic awards" said Acushnet’s marketing director John Peal. "The online golf community has become increasingly important to our brands over the past few years and we’d like to thank all of the Golfmagic users who voted for us for their ongoing support."

Similar sentiments were expressed by Mike Johnson-Hill, general manager for Galvin Green, whose products were voted (36.4 per-cent) the most popular waterproofs, ahead of ProQuip (27.1%).

’Galvin
Magic waterproofs – Galvin Green

"For so many Golfmagic.com followers to vote for Galvin Green as the No.1 golf waterproof is very special and rounds off a great year for the brand," he said. "Golfers know whether a waterproof performs well in the most demanding conditions and it’s pleasing to have feedback that confirms the fact that we never compromise. A big thanks to those who voted for Galvin Green."

Odyssey carried off the Magic putter award with its White hot 2-ball model, and TaylorMade grabbed the Magic rescue/utility with its Rescue Dual while PowaKaddy was named the leading electric trolley manufacturer.

Commented, chief executive Alan Thomson: "Thanks from Powakaddy. We are proud of our brand and delighted that Golfmagic.com visitors agree."

Direct Golf was voted Magic online retailer while American Golf took the Magic high street award.

Completing the awards, Colin Montgomerie was voted the European Personality of the Year, just ahead of Luke Donald and David Howell.
