Harrington with the bag Matthew wins
|
Matthew Robins, from Aylesbeare, Exeter, is moving to Iceland in April to start a new life, but fully intends to maintain his links with golf, as a 22-handicapper, thanks to Wilson Staff and Golfmagic.com
And to remind him of the kind of golfer he could be, he’ll be taking with him a fabulous prize he has just won – a golf bag used by Irishman Padraig Harrington during his 2004 season on the European Tour.
The bag was generously donated by Harrington and Wilson Staff for our competition which attracted over 2,100 entries. Overall winner was Alistair Chapman from Camberley in Surrey who gets a set of the latest Wilson Pi, Di or Ci irons, custom-fitted to his own specification.
Said Matthew (30), who has been studying web design and development: "Because I'm moving overseas to Reykjavik in about six weeks I don't have a job or golf club membership at the moment."
"I've been playing golf since I was about 12 years old but currently play and practice mostly at Padbrook Park in Cullompton, Devon and occasionally at Woodbury Park. I hope to be joining a course in Iceland as soon as the opportunity allows – and with my new bag I'll certainly look the part!"
Alistair has been in touch this week to say he read of his win while working in finance in Montreal, Canada and immediately spilled tea on his computer keyboard!
"I almost choked with surprise and wanted to email you straight away but had to wait while the IT guy replaced some damaged keys."
He tells me his home is on the Hampshire/Surrey border where he gets regular experience at a number of fine public courses including Pine Ridge and Downshire.
"I started playing golf in Boulder, Colorado where I was doing a business degree. I was injured so couldn't train and my room-mate suggested I try golf and was hooked, instantly.
"Boulder is 1600 metres above sea level so you can imagine my joy when watching drives take off into the blue yonder. We would go out for a round, make silly comments, place silly bets and meet interesting people, all while wandering around beautiful surroundings. What a way to go through life (and university)!
Alistair hopes to be fitted for his prize next time he’s on leave in the UK.
