Golf that's as cheap as chips!

Check these out for around £15 a round

Spectacular Traigh.

The first golf I played was over 30 years ago on a pitch and putt course behind the main street in West Runton, Norfolk. It’s probably a car park or a supermarket now – but to me it was Turnberry, St Andrews and Royal St Georges rolled into one.

The tees were little more than doormats, the greens undulating carpets of hard-packed meadow grass, but with a hickory wedge and an alloy centre-shafted putter in my hand, I felt I was the equal of Palmer, Nicklaus and Trevino, when I completed nine holes in 31 shots.

On later visits, I even took my own clubs but couldn’t improve on my best-ever score.

As I recall it cost about ‘five shillings’ for two circuits (equivalent to 25p) and it strikes me that rounds of golf today are still extremely good value.

Indeed for less than £15 a round you can play terrific courses in the UK with none more breathtaking that Traigh (pronounced ‘try’) in the Western highlands of Scotland. This nine-hole links runs beside a Gaelic beach, from which its name is derived, with stunning views to the Hebridean Islands of Eigg and Rum and the Cuillins of Skye on the B8008 coastal road 40 miles west of Fort William and just north of Arisaig.

The club’s website reveals that visitors who make the effort to reach this golfing outpost are welcome seven days a week, and golf clubs can be hired at the clubhouse. It also sells golf balls, clothing with green fees at £14 a day or if you want to hang around to admire the scenery, £50 for a weekly ticket.

Here’s some more courses we’ve selected that are as cheap as chips… If you know some more – especially hidden gems of outstanding value-tell us on the Forum.

As a newbie i've been playing a couple of courses around the NW namely Boysnope and Garstang CC. Boysnope is currently playing off winter tees and greens but come summer looks a good course for the beginner and has a driving range attached. Good value at £12 at weekends. A bit more demanding is Garstang, especially when they come off tha winter tees. £15 at weekends. If anybody knows of any cheap but testing courses let us know

I recommend Heaton Park in Manchester. It's a muni but for £10 it's a real challenge. It apparently hosted a few womens events in the past (open I think) and was designed by J.H. Taylor. http://www.uk-golfguide.com/england/25794.html

Bob, Perhaps you would like to add this offer to your cheap golf list. A guy receives an offer in his mail for a golf resort where everything costs one pound. He jumps at the offer and heads for a weekend of fun in the sun. He arrives and plays a round of golf which cost him one pound When he goes to dinner that night, it costs him one pound. His room also costs him one pound. The day before he has to check out, he decides to play a last round of golf and stops at the Pro's shop and charges a sleeve of of three balls to his room. When he is checking out next morning, he looks at his Bill and sees :- Golf £1. Dinner £1. Room £1. Sleeve of golf balls £3000. Calling over the Manager, he asks, 'What is this all about? Everything is supposed to cost £1, and you have charged me £3000 for three golf balls!. I'm sorry Sir, says the Manager 'but you obviously didn't read the small print in oue Brochure, because that is what our golf balls cost'. Well, said the Man, if I had wanted to spend that kind of money, I could have gone to that Luxury Hotel across the road and paid them a £1000 a day for a room and at least I would have known what I was paying for!. That is right Sir, you could have done that, said the Manager. Over there they get you by the Room and over here we get you by the Balls!!.

We played at Uxbridge GC yesterday. 18 holes for £9. We just sneaked into the twilight rate - it's normally £13.50. The greens were awful though. Just hollow tined and dirt left on them and not rolled. There was a notice saying they were doing it - hopefully it will be sorted by next week!
