Golf is seen by many as a luxury, so when the going gets tough on the business or domestic front, it’s usually one of the first things to go.

Members cancel their memberships, corporates rein in on lavish golf days and small midweek societies struggle to get the required numbers out.

But in order to combat these tricky economic times, golf clubs are beginning to think outside the box by promoting themselves more effectively on the internet - after all, very few courses can rely on prestige alone to keep golfers coming back for more.

You may remember at the beginning of the year when we covered Sweetwood Park’s swanky new site made by Net72.

And one club following the initiative is Royal Ashdown Golf Club, after teaming up with the web gurus to create a user-friendly website that can integrate a virtual course of the East Sussex beauty with impressive photography, hole-by-hole guides and tips from the club pro.

The site’s intuitive navigation system allows users to find the information they desire quickly and simply, as well as providing a secure members’ area where golfers can see the latest goings-on at the club.

Ashdown is also able to satisfy its membership with Net72’s ‘Contact List’ module that allows members to keep their details up-to-date. The club diary is available to sync directly with members’ calendars, and there is a portal for members to check competition results and up-to-date handicaps.

It worked for Sweetwoods Park, as Golfmagic found out in February, so watch this space for more clubs following suit in 2012.

Are flash new websites the way forward for golf clubs to pull in the custom?
