Change at address will help draw the ball

Hips too far back at address

It's that time in the season when many of you will be looking to make some subtle changes in your golf swing so that in 2010 you can hit the ground running with perhaps a new ball flight to give you a little more consistency and distance.

If you are trying to hit the ball with a new draw shape but are struggling with a swing change, try this new approach by setting the hips differently at address.

The position of the hips at address directly influences the angle of the spine and this in turn affects the plane of the turn and swing line.

Most golfers who struggle to draw the ball - that'll probably be 80 per-cent of you, then! - have the hips set too far back in the stance, which makes the spine too vertical at address. This position tends to make us tilt on the back swing and make it almost impossible to come into impact from the inside of the golf swing.

Shifting the hips forward in the stance helps make a more natural turn from the inside. This inclines the top of the spine away from the hole and automatically changes the shape of your swing.

Hips forward encourages a natural draw

Conversely if your swing plane is too flat, shift the hips further back at address, which makes the spine sit closer to a vertical position. This will make the swing path less inside and consequently will lead to a more upright swing.

Work on different hip positions at address to see what affect the new position has on the flight of your shots.

I'm trying to groove the changes taught by the pro a few months ago, and a couple of good points made by Pasty when viewing my swing as posted here. I'll see how that goes - I'm go back to see the pro if no improvement next year.

I already move my hips left at address (on irons) so that my left side is straight up from feet to hips. Rare that a slice my irons now, depending on my take away they tend to be straight to gentle fade .

Not sure what to work on this winter, already working on putting and chipping, maybe need to change my practice routine.

I'm going to try and work on a few things:

Not overswinging on my backswing

Weight transfer and turning not swaying

Trying to create some lag - to generate more clubhead speed

Just as a thought: would it be possible when people such as John contribute GM instructional articles to have a video snippet too?

In this example it's pretty easy to see what John is infering from the stills and the prose but sometimes seeing someone physically demonstrate a technique as they are describing it is really helpful.

I was close to getting some lessons recently but I have recently stumbled across the 9-3 drill (I know! Where have I been?) and its really helping me to stop my flying right elbow. It's improved my ball striking loads. However, struggling to apply it up through the set  - good for short irons just now though!

I agree with Chris C. No harm in asking surely? Would imagine Hoski would have easy access to a video camera?
