Thanks John, interesting article.
Have to agree, played at the weekend and for the first time went for everything (provided it wasn't too risky), and have to say had the most fun and enjoyment, and more importantly had some confidence for many a round.
I've always been (and probably like most) a better range player than course player. I can hit them straighter and more accurately time after time at the range. But here's the interesting part for me, I try and smash everything at the range. Give 100% (well probably closer to 90%) on every shot.
On the course however I always try and steer my way around. I'm not hitting it as hard and always going for the softer and supposedly easier option. I don't find the fairways, I don't get on (or close to) the Par5s in two. Don't make the long Par4s.
Is that a confidence problem? Too worried about the dangers, the trees, bunkers, water etc?
At the weekend I found more fairways with my driver, more greens/fringes with the long iron 2nd shot on the long Par4s, had the option to go for the green in two on 4/5 of the Par5s.
I guess it's the case of managing the confidence by removing the very high risk shots. But I didn't start out with much confidence and it wasn't until the 3rd hole that I got anything going. I did have a quiet spell in the middle but just hung in. I cannot say my confidence was lost it was more a case of lost momentum.
I certainly hope to play the more attacking game next weekend.
