I use one of each, I have my trusty Callaway X-Tour 3 wood and a FT Hybrid with 20 of loft.
I absolutley love the compact X-Tour 3 wood but couldn't find a similarly compact 5 wood anywhere so I went down the hybrid route.
Finding the right club in my opinion requires one to first establish what they are looking for in each club, and then demoing as many options as possible until you find the best option for your game.
For me I really wanted a compact headed, shallow faced 3 wood for picking the ball off tight fairways, I wasn't too concerned with performance off the tee as I knew if I found the right club for playing off the fairway I could experiment and find the right tee height if I needed to use it for these shots. After many trials and demo's I decided the X-Tour was a good match for me, I then just had to locate one for sale. (they are scarce as hobby horse poo!)
The hybrid choice was a similar process, although I started looking for a 5 or 7 wood with the same characteristics as the 3 wood initially, but couldn't find anything which suited! (The X-Tour 5 wood is actually bigger than the 3 wood!!!
). From there it was just a natural progression to try another avenue....the trial and error took a little longer as hybrids tend to go left on me, but over time I narrowed my options and found the best out there for me.
The above is time consuming, but I'm a teensy bit obsessive about my golf so it was, for me, a highly enjoyable process.....I'd thoroughly recommend it. Probably best to build up a supply of Brownie points with the wife beforehand though!
