Cobra joins march of the mallets

New IM model bids to rival the big-headed putters which are proving so popular.

Cobra IM putters

More and more of us – both amateurs and professionals – are turning to the big-headed mallet putters for salvation from our woes on the green.

Often a cross between a hammer and a small shovel, these mallets were surely derived from the original ‘three-ball’ putter introduced by DA Weibring in the early 1990s and banned by the authorities until Odyssey brought in its conforming two-ball model.

Now innovative Cobra Golf has joined the scrum for our attention with its Inner Mallet range of big-headed, back-weighted wands, demanding a pendulum stroke.

MI putters complete with striking headcover

The large, forged head is made from aluminium with a milled face that Cobra says ‘provides a soft, solid feel, true consistent roll and improved accuracy.’ It has also been designed to focus attention on alignment.

Finished in a two-tone effect, the IM putters are available from February in left or right-hand versions with either a large (IM-01) or mid-head size (IM-02). Shafts are either 34 or 35 inches and the suggested price, with its own distinctive headcover, will be £100.

See, all the potential performance of some of the 'ugly sticks' With a bit of style That's more like it and you can no doubt pick a ball up with the back of it too.

I have TM Mezza- with a bit of practice you can flick the ball up using the side... Clearly being able to do this is the most important feature in a putter!!!

Really should have used my time more wisely and practice my actual putting...

Somehow playing "keep-up" with a wedge or putter flicking always seems to get way too much attention.

Oh well.

How about bouncing the ball on the top of a whopping driver? I can't do more than about 4 keep-it-ups on mine (whereas with a wedge I am a between-the-legs man).

I'd be scared incase I'd damage it. I'm a between the legs man myself but that's a different story.

Its always better to swing from out to in and never come too much from the inside or you will end up leaving it short.. very nasty indeed.

Always get it to the hole.
