Golf, sex and rock and roll!

It was all there at the London Golf Show as punters flooded in to the ExCel centre to try and buy the latest products.

Hundreds queue for the London Golf Show

Former Rock star Rik Wakeman, a reformed drugs and drink addict, has enhanced his reputation in recent years as an entertainer, radio presenter and contributor to the popular TV series ‘Grumpy Old Men.’

And yesterday, on the opening day of the London Golf Show, he likened his first visit as a trip to ‘Hamleys for unfit geezers’ – in other words, a high quality store of boys toys where you can shop ‘til you drop.

Wakeman, who plays off a handicap of 13 at his local golf club in Diss, Norfolk, said: "I love golf and it’s really nice to come down to a show that’s absolutely full of big boys’ toys - it’s like Hamley’s for unfit geezers.’

Actor Kevin Whateley, star of ‘Auf Wiedersen Pet’ and the new detective drama ‘Lewis’ was equally impressed – spending 20 minutes holding up the long queue of patient, paying customers waiting to clip wedge shots from a dockside platform to a synthetic green moored 120 yards into the water.

’Rik

"I enjoy playing golf but wish I was a little better at it. Unfortunately I don’t get as much time as I like because I’m away filming a lot. But it’s a great game – and this a great event."

However, without wanting to sound too much like one of Wakeman’s irrascible malcontents, I found the exhibition at the ExCel centre disappointing in its content with only Mizuno, Wilson Staff, Srixon, Ram, Nike and TaylorMade among the major hardwear brands providing new equipment for visitors to inspect or try on the indoor range.

Brands like Titleist, Callaway, Nicklaus, Lynx, Cobra, Ping, Benross, Hippo, Nicklaus, Odyssey and Cleveland were signifant by the absence, equally disappointing for the organisers who hope to attract over 30,000 to this year’s show, which finishes at 5pm on Sunday.

Alternatively visitors could lose themselves in what one golfer described as ‘the chocolate factory’ - Europe’s biggest golf store set up exclusively for the duration of the show by Direct Golf UK.

As visitors poured on to the Dockland Light Railway which links the show site to central London, at least one in four seemed to be hugging a new putter, driver or rescue club, its head wrapped in a distinctive plastic bag.

In 2005, visitors had complained that their browse around the show was constantly interrupted by representatives of UK and overseas holiday destinations and property developments thrusting leaflets into their hands once they stepped into an area set aside for travel.

This year, however, hotels rubbed shoulders with exhibitors selling magnet therapy products while Tourist Boards vied for attention with innovative and sexy clothing brands like Froghair, Bunker Mentality, Tommy Hilfiger and Urban Golf.

Golf fashion, we’re told, has street cred with a new generation of golfers and with its daily fashion shows, the London Golf Show certainly gave the latest designers a chance to express themselves.

But whether new age golfers will wish to draw attention to themselves, in outrageous colours and prints before they have mastered the game is debatable.

The organisers of the London Golf Show are to be applauded for their determination in providing a platform for the industry to showcase its products – and already plans are under way for a repeat show in 2007 – I’d just like to see a little more innovation with a centrepiece arena providing non-stop entertainment.

With hundreds of players under contract to the major brands it would be great to see European Tour pros making guest appearances for interviews and autographs, playing trick shots and maybe competing on the synthetic chipping and putting greens.

But, while the top golfers are getting richer, with £1million tournaments commonplace, the industry is facing tough times in the marketplace and can’t afford to pay for and resource ground-breaking shows like this.

So the old geezers that Wakeman referred to, may well have moved on to line up for that first tee in the sky before the London Golf Show gets the support it deserves from both the trade and the public.

What did you think of the London Golf Show - its highs, its lows, its value for money. What clubs did you try? What did you buy in the superstore? Whom did you meet? What destinations are you tempted to visit? Tell us on the forum.

Discuss this story

Just been on The London Golf Show website and spotted two huge news stories. Firstly, Zane Scotland (!) currently ranked outside the world's top 1000 players (seriously!) is making an appearance at the event. I can't wait to ask him about life on the EuroPro tour. Secondly, Tony Adkins personal minder to X Factor judge and pop guru Simon Cowell, will be policing the exclusive area used by VIPs, dignitaries and the international media. Tickets for this "exclusive" area are currently trading on Ebay for around £1000 each!! I'm just so excited.

Do the organisers of the show really think that with 23 days to go until the show that these types of stories are going drag visitors along?
Posted: 03/04/2006 14:24

Not Zane Scotland! Damn, where did I put my autograph book?
Posted: 03/04/2006 14:29

Alex, are you coming to the show, or just going to sit around being miserable, sarcastic and slagging it off ?

Posted: 13/04/2006 14:21

London Golf Show Stop Press!!!!!!

Suffolk golfer Nick Davis, currently rated somewhere outside the UK top 1000 players, has asked his wife if she minds him going to the London Golf Show.

There. That should bring the golf groupies rolling along to the event.

Zane who??????

offer me 100 quid to cover my travel and digs then i may consider

good hunting to the exhibitors though, hope you get rid of all your plastic carriers and the sh*te that fills 'em
Posted: 14/04/2006 00:39

Nick, I'm sure the groupies will go if you bring along that cup you were waiting to present to someone.... :-)

Did they deliberatly photo you from the waste upwards? lol
Posted: 14/04/2006 07:26

Hi Guys, All the crap aside, I will be going on the Thursday, to see new gear and to see if I can get a deal on an electric Golf trolley & any other deals that might be going. I may have a go at hitting the green on the thames and speak to a few Tutors, have a swing analysis, try some putting, speak to fellow golfers and generally have a good time, for me its £12.50 plus Diesel. I am looking forward to it as its the first time I have been to the Golf Show...If its shite I will enjoy it as much as poss, but will not go next year.

If any of you are going let me know, I may bump into you.

I saw Zane Scotland at Carnoustie in 1999, he was 16 then, and the youngest qualifier for umpteen years. Has been hovering on the fringes of the "next big thing" radar for a while now.
Posted: 15/04/2006 22:10

I'll be around, probably on Friday.

I live like 500 metres from the Excel centre; it'd be cheeky not to pop along.

Matt
Posted: 15/04/2006 23:44

I'll be making a visit - anyone know when the best (any?) deals are to be had?

A mate is looking for his first set, I'm looking for some wedges too. Is there a scramble to sell gerar ion the Thursday or Sunday? Or are the RRPs held to?
Posted: 19/04/2006 08:59

Wilky, man, you've got issues. Chill. There's no need to to stick pins in your eyes. The golfing world is not the miserable place you think it is. You're suffering dude. Grab yourself a golf show ticket, come along and enjoy yourself.

Posted: 19/04/2006 10:29

£12.50 plus petrol. 800 miles @ 25 mpg (I'm hammering it here, you understand) = 32 gallons @ approx. £5 per gallon = £160.

OK, think I'll try the Scottish version in June. It's a different group running it but will probably be along similar lines. My only worry is that, due to a lack of foreign holidays in recent years, I'm not as adept at avoiding timeshare salesman as I once was ...

Posted: 19/04/2006 15:00

I went last year to the show. Trying to get on any try outs was almost impossible. The Direct golf shop was absolutely heaving, and bouncers on the entrance were restricting the amount of people going in. When you had found what you wanted, the queue to pay and get out was at least a twenty minute wait.I will go to the Direct golf shop at Sandown, and have a leisurely look around in peace and quiet, and try some of the equipment, without queing for an hour. Good luck show visitors.
Posted: 29/04/2006 20:46

I'm at a complete loss why anyone would pay the travel costs to go to London, then pay to get in, to queue to try out stuff you can just go down the local range and hit.

I suppose the British love the allure of something free, so some free crap to take hom is sufficient cause. But then, it aint really free is it?
Posted: 29/04/2006 21:19

I went Thurs and have to say I enjoyed it. It wasn’t busy at all and there were plenty of colourful exhibits. No queues in Direct Golf either.

Spent £160 on some nice tops, cool design hand enamelled ball markers.. to suit my putting mood, a salt crystal back warmer - superb and re-usable. Had a free putting lesson from the Putt Doc Harold Swash and numerous demo clubs. Got some Nomis kangaroo gloves - tried them yestdy 37pts so not too bad...

TM, MIZ, Nike were there in force on the ranges along with less well known brands to try in the longest drive comps.

The Remax/European Longdrive Stand was interesting as it had the vid of last years Remax Champs on.. I could not believe how crazy Adam Stacey was prior to each hit(came 3rd 368yds). Forget the stiff upper English lip. The big Yanks were positively moribund by comparison. Plenty of ugly but effective swings too and the new Accuflex Evo Lite shaft on display is a real beauty.

Collected brochures for courses and places I am planning to go.. such as Golf in Emiglio Romagna region in Italy, Portugal and Turkey etc. There were plenty of property stalls but they don’t ram it down your neck.

Damn...I missed the area for hitting balls into the floating greens.

All in all a nice afternoon spent.

Posted: 30/04/2006 10:40

JP9 - They didn't seem to advertise the island greens, but the queues were pretty long anyway. I had a lasagne (cold) instead.

I got a few discount offers at the Belfry and a few other courses, but didn't buy any clubs. I was hoping for something 'special' to grab me I suppose.
Didn't see it there.
Posted: 30/04/2006 19:48

Looks like I got lucky then! I managed to collect 3 tonne of brochures, more free tees than I can ever possibly use and a brand new Ping G5 driver for £100 from the shop. I thought Thursday would be the worst day to go on but I really enjoyed it and hope they continue the improvement for next year - I can almost justify the traveling costs to the other half ;-)
Posted: 01/05/2006 08:17

HI Guys, Hope your all well, I have been having a break from all this as my lower back injury has returned, Bummer.

I did however go to the LGS on the Thursday, could not try any clubs but did injoy the day, also got too many brochures and did also treat myself to the Yes pitch/ball markers, with the Celtic designs, really cool. Was also taken by one of the new golf courses being built in Cost Del what ever, villas going at great prices with 2 18 hole courses, everything looking great, will need to speak to Mrs Jahmoo first though. I enjoyed the day, even though I got stuck on the M25, J5-J6 with the fire, we got home at 10pm, still no worries:^)
Posted: 01/05/2006 23:08

Is that the Hacienda complex?
Posted: 02/05/2006 06:58

I made it down there on Friday - top day. Managed to get onto the range to try out the Sasquatch, got a lesson from Harold Swash (not something I can do every day, unless I change my name to Padraig Harrington) and bought a set of Nike irons for £200 from the shop.
Shame Ping weren't there, but I'm guessing that's their call rather than the organisers just forgetting to call them!
The floating green is genius - although after a couple of beers in the waterside bars the best I could do was dunk a few balls in the Thames. Let's hear how close you got it - if you did...
Looking forward to next year

Posted: 02/05/2006 09:15

Sorry to say i though this years show was rubbish compared to last year, probably wont bother next year.
Posted: 02/05/2006 12:05

What have they done to the show!!!

Last year was 1000 times better than what was on offer this year.

My complaints

It was nice not to wait a hour to try the floating green, but they could have at least tried to have the tee's pointing towards the green rather than in the other direction (the 127 yard tee's in case you though I ment the shorter distance).

There was only 1 putting area this year with only a few makes of clubs to try out.

More golf travel stalls than before and less of the smaller golf company's (might have been scared off, if they did not do well last year).

I'm sure last year we did not have to pay 1 pound or more on each stall (if you wanted to putt to win a hoilday or cap!!).

I was lucky and got my tickets 2for1 so only paid £7.50. I would have been pissed off if I paid £15.

I think I might give it a miss next year, maybe only go every other year.

There is another option

November 24th - 26th at the NEC, less holiday destinations, more kit, free competitions (although donations to charity welcomed) cheaper entry, Demo's, seminars, and lots more to be revealed closer to the date.

Posted: 02/05/2006 19:19

Ah ! Kev ! We wondered when you'd be back.

What did you make of the London Golf Show ? Did you get a lot of stand signed up for the NEC event ?
Posted: 02/05/2006 19:26

Just been monitoring for a bit and keeping quiet to give the southern lads a fair crack at the whip, now it's my turn.

After 3 hours of travelling I didn't have much time to look around as I'd arranged some meetings with people and the NEC team.

got some first hand opinions and hope to incorporate some original ideas into the NEC Event. Tickets for the NEC show are already selling well and exhibitor interest is amazing. Aiming for more hands on approach to the show rather than places to go in the sun.

I've started a new thread for people to place comments.

Well thank you Tweedledum and Tweedledee for allowing us to gate-crash your personal party!

GM would appreciate any further comments (constructive or otherwise) on just what ticket-payers are looking for in a consumer show, which I'm sure Kevin (later in 2006) and Andy (2007) will take on board in their respective shows. ED
Posted: 03/05/2006 16:00

OK, here's my 2p worth.

I DID pay £15 to get in and thought it was a complete rip off. I even had to queue for 40 minutes to get in because the organisers didn't open the ticket booth until Midday, which was when the show opened on the first day..even though they could have opened them an hour earlier, then ticket holders could have entered the ticket-holders entrance..thereby relieving congestion. To add insult to injury, there wasn't even a stand plan..you had to pay an additional £5 to buy a show guide to get that

Someone should complain to the ASA about the adverts that listed Callaway, Ping, Titleist, Footjoy etc..as none of them were there! Also missing from last year were Powakaddy, Hillbilly & Hippo to name a few.

The driving "range" was a bit of a nonsense as it was only about 40 yards long..Lord knows what benefit could be gleaned from hitting clubs there!

Last year, the holiday stands were in one section..so you could avoid it if you so desired. This year, they got round that by dispersing them all over the arena, making them unavoidable.

To me,the whole show seemed very "niche" and a bit like a holiday show, with gadgets galore on display. The Direct Golf store was a madhouse, just like last year, though the prices did not seem that different from their actual store prices.

There weren't any signs to the island green and frankly, I couldn't see the point this year, above making a contribution to SPARKS. There didn't seem to be any prizes on offer..it was just a couple of quid to hit 3 or 4 balls!

An indication of how far the show has fallen is the fact that there was a Cadillac stand there flogging cars...and to keep a tenuous link to golf, they had filled one of the boots with golf balls and were inviting donations to guess how many balls there were, in order to win a Nike golf bag!! Additionally, there was an Alfa Romeo stand (I think) that didn't even try to show a golf link!

I did bag quite a good deal on the Sky Caddie stand, though it was also available on the UK website, but apart from that did not feel compelled to buy anything else!

Loads of very scantily-clad women..indicating the target audience I would suggest!

All in all very disappointed.
Posted: 03/05/2006 20:35

The London Golf Show was a complete waste of time and money.
Utter rubbish!!!
Posted: 03/05/2006 22:07

A bit Harsh Nathan.

It's alot of hard work to organise and a constant learning experience bringing together something of that magnitude. I'd like to offer my Congrats to the London Lot for giving golfers something new to talk about and experience whether the mix was right this year or not.

Kev
Posted: 04/05/2006 06:16

Kev, fully agree that my comments were a little harsh, but I stand by what I said as it all relates to value for money- the show was expensive at £15 and the offering was weak, added to that the expense of visiting from outside London and this is how I personally felt about attending the London Golf Show Teams “Learning experience”.

I understand that every show presents differing issues and that it is a massive undertaking to put on something of this size, but this is what the London Golf Show team chose to do and it advertised heavily to ensure that we made the effort to attend. I would be very surprised if anyone walked through that door and was pleasantly surprised at what the show had to offer them. I think that far more emphasis needs to be put on new product and allowing the customer to discover how new products can benefit them, not what they can buy at a hugely reduced price from 3 seasons ago or which of 300 holiday destinations would best suit them. More thought, better Mix!

Posted: 04/05/2006 07:26

i had come from hull which was quite a journey on train as the trains wern't runing properly, very long day , as my first visit may be my last as i didn't think much of it . not wot i expected at all.although i did but some golfing equiptment.
Posted: 04/05/2006 08:21

I did not go down to the show. I live in Scotland, if they decide to have the golf show up here then I would definately go.

Posted: 04/05/2006 11:02

I PRE BOOKED TICKETS FOR THE SATURDAY BUT WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES, I RANG AND ASKED COULD I USE THE TICKETS ON THE SUNDAY AND WAS TOLD NO.
I COULD UNDERSTAND THIS IF IT WAS ALL SEATING, BUT IT WAS NOT.
HAVING SAID THAT, I ATTENDED THE SHOW LAST YEAR, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS OKAY AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GO HAVING PAID MY MONEY PISSED ME OFF, HOWEVER READING THE COMMENTS OF OTHER ATTENDEES, I AM GLAD I NEVER MADE THE JOURNEY AND I PROBABLY WONT BOTHER NEXT YEAR
Posted: 04/05/2006 11:55

I live fairly close to London, but I doubt that I would ever attend such a show. If I want to try out new golf products, I will visit Silvermere, or a Direct Golf, AD, or Nevada Bob.

I take at least 2 golf holidays per year, with a golf break in the UK over a long weekend. These are organised without resort to any of the "holiday" companies, so no interest in the travel stands. What is left? Zane Scotland, a floating green, and eye candy!!

Ok, maybe I'll go then.
Posted: 04/05/2006 12:10

By the way, Bob - don't forget to include swingingmanc in with Tweedles Dee & Dum!!
Posted: 04/05/2006 12:13

The red headed eye candy in the Union Jack dress was definately a bonus. But can she play golf?

Kev
Posted: 04/05/2006 12:25

I went to the Golf Show on the last day with my 15 year old son, his friend and his uncle. We were all very disappointed as it seemed to be holidays, holidays, holidays etc. no bargins to be had and absolutely manic in Direct Golf. At about 4.35 my son and his friend went to go on a putting device and driving device only to be told that they were finished and we saw lots of exhibitors packing up and leaving well before 4.30. An announcement was made that the show did not close until 5.00 and that exhibitors could start dismantling after that time. Also no signs to the floating green. We will not be bothering next year.
Posted: 04/05/2006 12:45

i only travelled for about 1 hour across london to get there, but what a waste of time , expecting to get a new set of taylor made irons ,bag and wedge i was sure i was going to get a show bargain , i have seen cheaper at other stores online ,no chance to try the clubs or have time with a pro to get decent advice on spending a good sum of money , all i got told was if i wanted a price match i would only get this if i went to my local direct golf , as they were 75 pounds more expensive (WHY BOTHER).as for kevs comment about the bird in the union jack outfit she looked more like a russian stripper than a classy promotions model , but with not a great deal else to look at she probably livened a few peoples day up .
