In the Bag: Horschel and Rumford

After knocking on the door for the past month, PING staffer Billy Horschel finally broke through for maiden PGA Tour glory with a one-shot victory at the Zurich Classic.

Horschel fired a scintillating joint course record 64 on Sunday as he maintained his composure through two weather delays to reverse the fortunes with DA Points, who last month beat him by a shot at the Houston Open.

The 26-year-old American, who trusted a full bag of PING equipment, moves into third on the FedEx Cup standings following four top-nine finishes in his last four events.

“I knew exactly the break on it and everything,” said Horschel, of his 27-foot birdie putt for the win at the 72nd hole with his PING Redwood Piper.

“I just told myself, I haven’t made one of considerable length this week. And I was like if it’s my time, this putt needs to go in.”

Starting the final round two shots off the pace, Horschel took the tournament by the scruff of the neck with seven birdies in the space of eight holes from the fifth.

A bogey at the 15th de-railed his charge but he bounced back superbly when stiffing his approach to the 16th and tucking home the decisive putt at the last.

Horschel ranked tied second in greens in regulation at TPC Louisiana (82%) with his PING S56 irons, third in strokes gained putting (1.769) and inside the top-30 in driving distance with his PING G25 (288 yards).

On the European Tour, Titleist staffer Brett Rumford collected his fourth European Tour title and first for six years at the Ballantine's Championship after rolling home an eagle at the first playoff hole.

The 35-year-old Australian appeared to have one hand on the trophy in regulation play with three holes to play but made double bogey at the 16th to fall back into a three-way tie for the lead with Peter Whiteford and Marcus Fraser.

But he bounced back superbly, albeit with a quick phone call to coach Pete Cowen before the playoff, before striking his approach to the par-5 18th to four feet for eagle.

“A lot of thanks go to Pete,” said Rumford. “I battled with my driver constantly and I guess that’s what keeps me out of most golf tournaments.”

Both Horschel and Rumford trusted the Titleist Pro V1x ball, FJ Icon footwear and FJ glove.
