If Phil Mickelson goes ahead and wins this week’s US Open at Pinehurst, much of his success will be down to the new Callaway HX Tour 56 ball he’s currently using.
He has had his revoutionary secret weapon – due for release in the UK in July – in play for much of the season and it was used in three of his lowest ever 18-hole scores, including a 59 at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Hawaii last November, a 60 during his win at the FBR Phoenix Open and a course-record 62 at Spyglass Hill when he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Already nine events have been claimed with the ball, which Callaway claims has a softer feel and more spin than the popular HX Tour, while delivering comparable distance.
A new manufacturing process known as RIM (Reaction Injection Molding) technology has allowed Callaway to make the HX Tour 56 with an ultra-thin, softer cover, producing low spin and high speed off the driver. The company says the combination also makes the ball feel softer on shorter shots around the green.
Six deeper depressions in the aerodynamic pattern on the sub-HEX dimple pattern contribute to consistency and trajectory while reducing drag and creating lift, carry and roll, says Callaway.
The new HX Tour 56 will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price of around £40 per dozen.
