Cleveland's latest XLS monster driver

Cleveland Golf was anxious to keep details of its latest HiBore XLS Monster driver under wraps when it was first hinted at the Golf Europe trade show in October in an effort to retain a certain mystique. A sample of the club was purportedly protected under a headcover enticing visitors to its stand to remove it for a peek at the risk of breaking an embargo which the company slapped on it.

However, it has turned out to be one of the industry's worse-kept secrets with some sample clubs mysteriously finding their way into the media and supposedly 'inside information' discussed on equipment forums around the world.

Now, however, it's at last in the open and Cleveland is hoping The Monster lives up to the reputation it has been creating.

It will be available from February 1 in Standard, Tour or Draw models, boasting a clubface that Cleveland says is 16 per-cent larger than its HiBore XLS predecessor and utilising 'Distance Driven Geometry' by lowering the crown. This apparently, lowers the centre of gravity to produce 'the only face-centered sweet spot in golf.'

The Monster's larger face also allows its sweet spot to be expanded, while an additional perimeter weighting makes the clubface more stable and forgiving. Extra distance, says Cleveland is also achieved by a longer, lighter Fujikura Fit-On Flightspeed shaft generating higher swingspeeds and more powerful trajectory. All three Monster driver models will carry a recommended price of £219.

February has also been ear-marked for the appearance of Cleveland's latest - and delicious-looking CG7 and CG7 Tour irons.

Both combine Gelback and Micro-Cavity Technology, respectively, an injection-molded, lightweight insert to reduce face vibration and improve feel and progressively sized micro-cavities to assist ball trajectory.

The CG7 and CG7 Tour irons, says Cleveland, also include heel/toe muscle weighting, which deliver more forgiveness from miss-hits.

The CG7 irons are will have a recommended price of £419 for 4-iron to pitching wedge (steel shafts) and £475 (graphite). For seven CG7 Tour clubs, only available with steel shafts, the price will be £475.
