Mizuno says it has put the 'science of feel' at the top of its design agenda with eagerly anticipated the release in September of its new range of MP and MX clubs.

David Llewellyn, Mizuno's Europe's research and development manager says 'vibration' was one of the key human criteria for evaluating feel and so using a system of 'Frequency Analysis', their engineers interpreted 'pure strike' into a range of different heads for different types of players - MP-52 for the lower handicapper, MP-62 for the low to mid-handicapper and MX-200 and MX-100 for the mid to high handicap golfer.

"The key characteristic of Mizuno irons has always been their unique soft feel with our one-piece Grain Flow Forging process but we wanted to search more deeply into how material interacted with design," said Llewellyn.

"While feel is very much subjective, we were able to find vibration patterns that best communicated feedback to our research panel. Not just the tone, but also the length and curve of sound were key to hitting the most satisfying feedback."

"We managed to bring this more subtle element into the design process - so while the new irons all hit new combinations of workability and ease of use, the amazing feel is what most golfers will notice first".

For Tour players, pros and low handicap amateurs who prefer a cavity back design, the classic-styled MP-52 has a discreet 'Dual muscle' pocket cavity with 'twin crescents' milled into the head to deepen its centre of gravity, increase stability from off centre hits and forgive like a bigger head.

The MP-62 'Tour-ready' Dual Muscle irons (right-hand only) are a design based on the most requested adjustments and prototypes from Mizuno's Tour workshops - and that means minimal offset and a versatile soleplate inspired by Luke Donald's personal grind 'to ensure crisp ball striking.'

"The MP-62 looks simple but packs in a lot of technology." says Llewellyn. "Both Luke and Jonathan Byrd have a very specific sole grind to help their irons exit the turf, so there's a very aggressive bevelled trailing edge that we've built into the MP-62. We've also shifted enough weight to make the MP-62 very workable, but with enough forgiveness to take the sting out of miss-hits."

The MX-200 cavity irons, says Mizuno, takes Grain Flow Forged forgiveness 'a quantum leap forward' with the introduction of Y-Tune - a Y shaped reinforcement pad to match the miss-hit patterns of amateur golfers.

Says Llewellyn: "Y-Tune takes a large sweet area and makes it more effective by extending it towards the toe, exactly where most amateurs make the majority of their miss-hits. When forged irons are this playable, there aren't too many reasons why a low or mid handicap golfer would still need to use a cast iron."

They will be available in right (steel and graphite) and left hand (steel only) from 3-PW.

The MX-100 irons combine design with Y-Tune 'for the ultimate in forgiveness and ease of play,' pushing the centre of gravity low and deep for a high ball flight. Available RH (graphite and steel) and LH (steel only) from 4-PW.

The MX-100 model for women features re-engineered 5-degree loft gaps to suit slower swing speeds and an additional Lite shaft in right-hand graphite only.

Completing the new Mizuno line-up is the MX Fli-Hi utility club - a high flying, soft landing direct alternative to the standard 3, 4 or 5 iron and suitable for players of all handicaps.
