Ryder Cup hero Sergio Garcia, has switched to TaylorMade clubs and a Maxfli golf balls at this week’s Trophee Lancome in Paris. He opened with a four under par 67.

Already a wearer of adidas clothing and shoes, the brand which shares the same corporate umbrella as TaylorMade and Maxfli, the young Spaniard no longer endorses Titleist clubs and balls which he has played since an amateur.

He will have a a new R500 driver in his bag featuring the TaylorMade logo. He also wears the adidas logo on his cap at St Nom La Breteche course where he is the defending champion.

Currently fifth in the Official World rankings, Garcia has won three times on the PGA Tour and four times on the PGA European Tour. He was British amateur champion in 1998 and has made two Ryder Cup appearances.

After his first round he said he was still getting used to his new clubs, but had practised with them solidly last week.

Said TaylorMade/adidas chief Mark King: "With Sergio's ability and spirit, this is a match made in heaven."

*After the opening round of the Paris tournament Alex Cejka holds a one shot lead with a 64 from a group that includes Nick Faldo.

Having noted Sergio's very successful year in 2002 and accepting his various achievements around the world, I do not feel he is, or will be recognised, as one of the real Greats in golf due to an inconsistancy in his Putting ability. I do think he is a terrific golfer and will win Tournaments over the years, making a lot of money and at 22years of age will mature into an even more successful player , but not one of the real Greats. I am sure a lot of people will disagree with my view on Sergio but thatis how I see it......the difference is he han't quite got the magic on the greens.

It's interesting isn't it - he's clearly prodigiously talented, and can win, but I also have lingering doubts as to whether he will be a Great. Do you know what his record is when going head to head with Woods? I always find it interesting that Monty, another awesome player with that major trophy missing in his cabinet, has never won a tournament that Woods has also been playing in - or at least that's what I've heard.

The problem sergio is inconsistentcy not just in putting but in all parts of is game, every tournament a different part of his game seems to go wrong, but his putting is his major weakness that will let him down in majors against the likes of woods and els. But after seeing him using the belly putter in the mercedis championship, (after he threw his regular putter in the lake in a fit of rage), it did improve his putting, but he has now gone back to his regular putter.

Sergio, while good entertainment, will NOLT win a major - that swing of his will not hold up under pressure, neither will his putting - But I am looking forward to several painful facial expressions from him during the process!
