Prowler with built in ‘scoop’

A putter can have an insert face, heel-toe weighting, low centre of gravity, angled hosel, multi-coloured paddle grip, interchangeable cartridges and any number of alignment aids.

I love all these features and occasionally one of these combinations will help me hole more putts.

But, when an opponent concedes a putt, if I can’t scoop up the ball with an instinctive, flamboyant, Zorro-like flourish with the back of the clubhead, it will never quite endear itself.

Surely, it’s all part of golf to be able to toss up the ball casually, then pluck it out of the air with the noncholence of a magician grasping a floating silk handkerchief.

So imagine my particular interest when Lynx claims to introduce ‘a unique and innovative ball pick-up mechanism’ to its LP1 Prowler putter!

It’s designed with an eliptical space behind the head, which also helps with the forward weighting for a smoother, non-skid roll off the clubface. A polymer face insert also claims to assist the strike with softer feedback for better touch.

The LP1 Prowler is available in three shaft lengths for men and two (33 and 34-inch) for women and has a recommended cost of £69.

As you will have seen from the article, I like a putter I can scoop up the ball with. It's just a personal thing born out of flamboyance, I guess. Do you have any personal mannerisms or foibles you'd like to declare?

I like to pick the ball up with a putter too. Unfortunately, I also like the 2 Ball putters.

It's taken me a while but I can now pick the ball up (most of the time) with the 2 ball.

I once played with someone who before every shot insisted on rubbing their grips dry by sticking it into their groin and thrusting the club around in a most lascivious manner. He was quite oblivious to how ridiculous he looked.
I like to use a shiny penny as my ball marker and have the Queen's head looking directly down the line of the putt. The plan fails however, because she's not very good at giving me the right read.

When using Dunlop balls, I like to set it up ont the tee peg with the arrow of the logo pointing straight down the fairway.

Rarely goes that way though ;)

i am intrigued as to how you pick up the ball with a 2ball. i am off to practice with my odyssey now!! :)

i wish i had foibles. I try preshot routines, but can't even repeat them nevermind my swing :)

Whatever ball I use I have to have the logo "looking" at me so I can read it on the tee peg. I think that this helps me keep my eye on the ball and clears other thoughts from my head if I'm just looking down and reading "Srixon" or whatever. Again rarely helps that much though.

Head Coverz - i like that one. I am going to try it for both putting and driving. I putt far better when i don't let my chase the putter on my backswing or the ball as i hit.

Driving is still a black art for me but it can't hurt!

Must have a bag tough enough so that when I chuck my putter at it in disgust it doesn't smash the shaft of my driver.

I only use white tees, white balls and white gloves.

I have never taken a practice swing before taking a shot.
Posted: 30/11/2005 13:10

MrS3 - you use the small flange at the side. It takes practice but it can be done.
Posted: 30/11/2005 13:18

I used to have a problem with my arm falling out of my bag, after which I would have to retrieve it from the bemused group following behind.

I dont like playing with No2 balls...I only use them as provisionals.

My ball preference is for No3 then No4 then No1.
Posted: 30/11/2005 16:04

I also only use white tees, white balls and white gloves.
I never take a practice stroke before a putt.
Posted: 30/11/2005 16:28

I try to lign up properly. It seems it's pretty rare for players of my handicap...
Posted: 30/11/2005 16:29

I have a 'turkish eye' charm on my bag that is said to bring good fortune, and would not consider taking it off any time soon.
Posted: 30/11/2005 16:47

I once flicked a ball up with my putter and hit it Tiger like in mid air 30 yards towards my bag. Misssed my bag and hit my girlfriends dads 17 hole old power kaddy smashing part of it to bits. A one in a million shot.
Posted: 30/11/2005 16:54

I go through the ritual of a pre-shot routine before every shot - despite the ball not going anywhere near where it is intended to.
Posted: 30/11/2005 16:54

I have a dolphin key ring that my daughter brought me from majorca hooked on my bag..

And erm, I have a tiger head cover which I always like to put on the driver with eyes facing forward so he can see where we are going..

I absolutely must have 6 pints before teeing off and 6 pints after the round, or it spoils my day.

"lascivious" nice vocab Tom. I'll write that one down.

Posted: 30/11/2005 16:59

I always use a broken tee.... I dont have a driver so its easy to find one to break down to size!
Posted: 30/11/2005 17:05

RE: picking up the ball with a 2ball odyssey. I see a flaw in my equipment....i have the blade version of the two ball. No flange on blade version. :(

McAlan really does deserve those shoes Bob!!! I laughed with him on that for some time.

Last couple of months I have developed a putting routine which is producing good results, which is :

Look down the line once, look down the line a second time and before my eyes get back to the ball I start the takeaway. This stops me from looking at the putter before I take it back. Works for me.
Posted: 30/11/2005 18:29

I mark my first ball with an orange cross on both sides and leave my provisional unmarked.

If I have a really bad hole that ball is marked as unlucky for the next hole and will be swapped out for a new one.
Posted: 01/12/2005 06:18

I prefer not having to scoop up the ball at all, but rather pick it up from the hole :)
Posted: 01/12/2005 06:43

HP - I remember that avatar you had of the lady who looked like she was sneezing. That made me feel all lascivious, like.
Posted: 01/12/2005 07:42

I like a putter that is good for 100 yards in to the rough with a back handed swipe, when I three putt.
