With drivers being hit so far - and not necessarily straight - the role of the wedge is becoming increasingly important for those delicate shots from 100 yards in.

So it's no surprise to learn that two of the leading manufacturers have chosen this week to release a new range of wedges. Ping reveals its Tour-W series while Cleveland announces its CG14s.

The smaller-than usual Ping wedges feature a high density tungsten weight in the toe of the club which, Ping says, increases the moment of inertia to keep the clubface square at impact and improves forgiveness. Lee Westwood used a 54 and 58 degree Tour-W wedges in winning the Quinn Direct British Masters at the weekend.

Using a Custom Tuning Port, Ping says its engineers were able to move the centre of gravity down and forward to allow the correct head rotation during a shot and a traditional tear drop shape, allows a player to be more creative on pitch and chip shots around the green.

Cleveland says its CG14 wedges offer both versatility and feel and feature its latest Zip-groove technology - bigger and more precisely milled for more 'consistent spin and control.'

CG14s also has a lightweight gel in the back cavity to help reduce vibration at impact with miss-hits and a wider sole to improve contact on both full and finesse shots. Price is £89 in either chrome or black pearl finish, with six loft options between 50 and 60 degrees.
