Simpson reveals Titleist upgrade

US Open champion decides time is right to play Titleist 913 woods and AP2 irons

In recent months, it’s been commonplace to see Tour players teeing up with out-of-date equipment.

We’ve spotted Brandt Snedeker collecting the 2012 FedEx Cup with a discontinued TaylorMade SuperFast TP and old-school Odyssey White Hot XG in the bag, Phil Mickelson using a nine-year-old Titleist 980F 5-wood, Tiger Woods with a six-year-old Nike fairway and Steve Allan relying on a 14-year-old TaylorMade Firesole Rescue.

US Open champion Webb Simpson was no different by gaming Titleist 909 woods - a model that launched in 2008 - as well as 680 muscleback irons en route to his maiden major championship last summer.

But after years of using the same woods and irons, the 27-year-old American has finally decided the time has come to upgrade his bag. Titleist reps received the call and wasted little time by travelling to meet Simpson and dial in his new equipment ahead of the new season.

When Simpson arrived at Kapalua for the Tournament of Champions two weeks ago, he had a completely new setup that included Titleist 913D3 (10.5 degree) driver, 913Fd (15- and 18-degree) woods, 913H (20-degree), AP2 (4-PW) irons and new Pro V1x prototype.

Although the changes haven't brought instant success for the three-time PGA Tour champion, he did record four credible rounds in the 60s at the Sony Open en route to a tie for 20th at the weekend.
