Superlaunch irons revealed
TaylorMade Burner Superlaunch irons set for April debut
If, like me, you're a self-taught golfer who graduated to the game from playing cricket, tennis, rugby and football and with a certain amount of hand-eye co-ordination picked up the rudiments for golf quite quickly, you will be very interested in this week's news from TaylorMade. I soon learned to be able to make consistent contact with the ball and keep it reasonably straight when I took up the game in the 1970s and with a tidy short game got down to a respectable handicap verging on single figures. But I've never had the real satisfaction of a ball flight that allows the ball to drop and stop like the pros do it. Lively hands tend to propel the ball in a penetrating trajectory with a sidespin that works well under the wind but tends to pitch short and stop. I rarely use the back of the green and long for a towering ball flight in calm conditions that allows the ball to nestle by the flagstick. However, TaylorMade have identified my weakness and, I suggest, thousands of other low-ball hitters, by introducing new Burner Superlaunch irons that will have instant appeal for many of us when they arrive in April. Says the Basingstoke-based company: "There are golfers, mainly slower swingers and players who produce a naturally low ball flight, who can't launch our latest Burner irons high enough to enjoy the full benefits of the club. As easy as the Burner is to launch high and long, we needed something even easier. "The Burner SuperLaunch, is an iron specifically designed to be spectacularly forgiving and easy to get in the air, for this segment of players to get more distance. In addition, Burner SuperLaunch irons' generous offset helps straighten a slice and promote a draw." Now they're talking my language!
Burner SuperLaunch irons, says TaylorMade, are also engineered to deliver tremendous forgiveness, which makes it a great iron for high-handicappers with patterns of inconsistent ball-striking. The clubs in the set (4-iron to sand wedge) feature a wide, multifunctional sole which creates a low and deep centre of gravity to help get the ball airborne. Set the Burner SuperLaunch iron behind the ball and, TaylorMade claims, players will notice a comforting and substantial topline, cambered downward to give a more dynamic appearance. Additionally the irons have a changing, confidence-inspiring, profile through the set. Apart from high launch and added carry that encourages the ball to land steeply and softly, Burner SuperLaunch irons incorporate a new TaylorMade groove design that conforms to the R&A's new ruling on grooves for high-level competition in 2010 and in recreational golf starting in 2024. The standard 8-club set of steel-shafted Burner SuperLaunch irons will be offered at £499 and at £599 with graphite shafts, with four flex options. The Burner SuperLaunch ladies' set features its own unique purple colour palette. Sounds like the TaylorMade SuperLaunch irons will deliver what many of us have been craving for years.
