X-20 irons from Callaway are Orlando show-stoppers

We can expect them in Europe and the UK in the first part of 2007 but be prepared to pay premium prices.

As well as its controversial square-headed FT-i driver, Callaway Golf had lots more to shout about at the PGA trade show in Florida, including the latest generation of the legendary X-Series irons - the X-20, X-20 Tour and X Forged.

We can expect the clubs in Europe and the UK in the first part of 2007 but be prepared to pay premium prices for the privilege of owning the clubs currently in the hands of some of the world's leading players including Phil Mickelson, Charles Howell, Thomas Bjorn and Annika Sorenstam.

The X-20 clubs will be available with either graphite or steel shafts with a recommended retail price of £660 or £625 respectively, though several outlets are already taking advance orders for the 3-iron to pitching wedge sets at a strong discount.

Callaway claims the X series, which also includes X-Forged clubs for around £775 per set 'is all about giving serious golfers total performance with enhanced forgiveness.'

Its engineers have been hard at work lowering the centre of gravity on the X-20s (six per-cent below the X-18s) re-distributing weight in the head for extra stability and integrating its VFT technology to increase ball speed off the clubface.

The X-20 Tour irons, meanwhile, have been given a shorter blade, narrower sole, thinner topline and square toe to produce a more traditional look 'for the more skilled player.'

Also from the Callaway stable this Spring, look out for the Odyssey Black Series of traditional-looking, milled putters and Odyssey White Hot XG Marxman putters with a revolutionary alignment design

Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons are expected to make an impact together with Top-Flite D2 balls - distance, feel and straight models - in 15-ball packs for around £16-£20.

Posted: 06/01/2007 18:53

i also have my eyes on a set of mizuno mp32's but i will have to square that with the wife :)
Posted: 06/01/2007 21:41

Posted: 06/01/2007 23:43

I will stop buying equipment , I will stop buying new equipment, I will stop buying new equipment.

So I told myself a few months back

Oh why did I buy the Callie fusions last month they really are no better than what I was using DOH!! and I really should not have bought that 3 Rescue in the pre Christmas sales I know it will only end up back on ebay
Posted: 07/01/2007 11:33

currently installing a comp NT shaft in my adams 3 wood.
will put project x shafts in my M675s
the only thing s i want are a set of nike blades(used a 1 iron last year so want them for fun) and a r510DF 9.5/10.5(which is nigh on impossible to find)

As they say it’s hip to be SQUARE. I cannot wait to try the new square drivers that are coming out. Taylor Made are bringing one out in April/May. I know it’s all hype and marketing but it’s a good excuse to buy another new driver!

So will give them a try out and will probably go for the Callaway or TM, still not a fan of Nike golf equipment.

Posted: 07/01/2007 13:06

TM bringing out a square driver? where did you hear that?

not to my knowladge. they are bringing out the R7 Superquad(out now in the states and on ebayuk) and R7 Burner.
Posted: 07/01/2007 14:11

I remember reading a recent interview with a Taylor Made rep on GolfDigest.com. He was asked if TM was looking at bringing out a square driver and he said there were prototype square drivers in development and they will be looking to bring one out.

Lets be honest TM are like London buses with their drivers, as soon as one comes along another 3 follow closely behind. If TM don’t bring a square headed driver out they will get stuffed by Callaway and Nike on driver sales for 2007.

I am happy with my driver and would only consider a change because I want to try a square driver.

Just got mine today for my birthday.

MacGregor Bobby Grace MK6.4GT. Used it today and it is very nice indeed. First putt on the first green (and I kid you not) I sunk a 25 footer.

Just bought my new set, Wilson Deep reds, and i love them, £149 bargain.
Posted: 21/01/2007 22:42

My purchases this year have been very modest, but I am a beginner. A set of RAM Wizard II irons (£90), a few other nick knacks from www.thesportshq.com and Sports World (about £60 all told) and a Prosimmon stand bag from eBay.

So far I think I'm going to get on very well with the Wizard II's although it will be a while before I'm used to the 3 and 4 hybrids. I've never used clubs like them before so I think that's why. I just hope the weather clears up soon as I don't want my first round of golf to be played in horrible conditions!
Posted: 21/01/2007 23:03

last saturday i went to the range with two new purchases albeit from different era's.both 3 woods which are a v steel 2 and a joe powell smoker persimmon i can say that although the v steel was slightly easier to hit the distance of carry were the same.the joe powell persimmon i could shape much better and it was £50 less.have fairway woods moved forward in technology that much ? i'll let you know at the end of the season...
Posted: 22/01/2007 21:44

Just bought a new izzo stand bag for winter months.
Then on look out for new summer shoes.

Then a new driver...(not got a clue what one though)
Posted: 23/01/2007 17:11

Toying with buying an R7 425 TP, to see if it's an improvement on my current 400cc R7TP version.
Not sure it's worth the hassle though, might just stick with what I've got! :)
Posted: 23/01/2007 19:36

Scouting around for a new 3 wood, haven't carried one for years, but just joined another longer course, (don't tell the wife that there are now 2 subs going out:O)), & need the extra length off the fairway.

Musing about the Miz F50?
Posted: 23/01/2007 19:58

rob if you cant hit the 400 then you might as well retire (save the money).seriously though.have a go with an old persimmon and you'll think the 400 is a 700cc size ! lol...
Posted: 23/01/2007 20:07

Mizuno F50 sounds like a very wise choice to me Newnick :)
Posted: 23/01/2007 22:27

M.A.G.

My golf chums would love me to change drivers cos I'm killin' the trusty 400cc driver!
I really like the deep face and solidity on the original R7, not sure if the 425 or 460 version's faces are any deeper? (I'm sure they'll feel less solid due to the increased cc's), doesn't stop me always looking for that little bit extra though.

Oh no!! Despite all my self promising new set of combo irons on their way.

Mind you they were cheap at just £60 the set

Set of Dynacraft from a clubmaker.

Taz
Gonna try and get through a whole season without buying any golf equipment except the stuff that wears or gets lost.

Just replaced the putter as my Christmas treat and haven't yet used it (silly to use a Scotty on temps)

I hit everything I've got perfectly 80% of the time - why change?

...I just need to sort out the 20% thats down to my errors.
Posted: 25/01/2007 08:48

The only thing I am "planning" to change is my driver as my current R580XD is non-conforming.
Just bought set of MX25's in December which will last for a few years.

My stats is similar to yours Alan ie 80/20 but unfortnately the other way round, and down to my errors.
So I suppose lesssons is order of the day thie year.
Posted: 25/01/2007 08:52

Last January I bought a set of Ping G5 irons for my 40th birthday. Really thinking about the Callawat FT-5 driver in the next month or so. There's a Callaway demo day in a couple of weeks. But I'm left-handed so I don't know how much selection there will be.
Posted: 27/01/2007 13:39

Well I won't be sucked into buying a square headed driver that's for sure.

I've never read so much bullsh*t in all my life.

The manufactures must think we are so stupid and made of money!

Posted: 27/01/2007 14:55

No more golf clubs from me this year unless I want a divorce from my wife but I do like the look of the callaway x20
Posted: 28/01/2007 09:57

My last purchase was the Nike Sasquatch Driver 10.5.with an Aldila NV65 regular shaft, bought it last summer, consistent line and length off the tee
Could have sold it ten times over, has taken my handicap down 4 shots.
So only intend to buy some new golf gloves and shoes this year.
Posted: 28/01/2007 13:19

i know that the shaft i use will depend on my swing speed but the head will need a certain kind of shaft as well. Th Df was the original high launch, low spin head which means that i would need a slightly higher spin shaft such as a V2 or Comp NT (but having said that i bomb my 9.5 R510TP with speeder 757 and with the tp and DF heads so similar it may be stupid top look beyond a 757)
Posted: 28/01/2007 13:21

The square heads are good its down to moment of inertia that means the guys that shank and slice will straighten their drives because the head will consistantly come in square and also as far as putter are concerned lot lie and length plus head weight are a factor if you want to know more on this contact myself or nigelbambridge@hotmail.co.uk

i got my set last year but im sure i could find room in my bag for one of those square drivers.
Posted: 28/01/2007 17:56

€s if you ever pull the speeder. Give me a shout & I might buy it.
Posted: 29/01/2007 16:03

Just got my copy of Todays Golfer in the post and it has a huge supplement of all new items for 2007. The credit card companies will be so pleased!!!!

I'm determined not to spend too much this year but I couldnt miss the bargain of the century (so far). My mate sold me his Ping Tour 56' wedge for £30 yesterday as he didnt like it. I then went and holed my first chip for a birdie with it!

The look on his face was worth the £30 alone!
Posted: 29/01/2007 16:42

i have 4 r510s now with 2 TP(8.5 and 9.5) with speeders and im ulikley to pull them as they work so well

im just searching for the right shafts to put in my DF versions.
Posted: 29/01/2007 22:24

€s why 4! Would you be willing to sell a TP 8.5? Sorry to be a div but whats the flex? Shaft Weight. Whats your swing type, speed & your preferred kick point. I know this is particular to you but what distance and average dispersion do you get. Cheers
Posted: 29/01/2007 23:00

Been looking for some new irons for some time. After checking out a few have settled for new Wilson Di7's. Got measured up last week and they should arrive sometime at the end of next. I cannot wait.
Posted: 29/01/2007 23:22

btw - there is an excellent article in said Todays Golfer about Custom Fitting of clubs and how much difference it can make to someones quality of strike (huge). I will certainly be getting custom fitted next time I change clubs.
Posted: 30/01/2007 08:56

Just away to get fitted out by Callaway at St Andrews ( Scotland ) either the new X Tours or X20 Tours. Just bought the new X Hot callaway fairway wood, its a wee ripper, pure class and work on Callaways behalf here.

Also getting fitted up with the new FT5, coming out sometime in January, our local pro has recently been fitted with Callaways latest launch monitor system etc.

Happy Golfing

Martin in honesty in just a greedy so and so.

both the Tp's have speeder 757 in stiff flex with the Tp graphics and think they weigh about 76grams(not sure about that).

i live in the sticks so cant give you launch details such as spin and SS but they are long and offer great control but you must be a good consistent ball striker to get the most out of these heads(why the fook am i using one then?;-))

give me a PM and I'll point you in the right direction to where to get one.

Posted: 30/01/2007 17:33

Just bought a set of taylormade R7 TP's. What can I say, well I will start with the dogs bolloxs. I never thought i would swap from Mizunos but i took the plunge and they are fantastic. So if you are a low to mid handicapper and looking for a new set then you can't go far wrong. By the way I am not a rep for taylormade. lol
Posted: 01/02/2007 00:07

Nor me but I just bought a R7 460 driver and a R7TP 3Wood. I've lost a bit of distance with the increased loft now 11.5 Degrees but I hit the fairway when I used to hit the trees. gained about 5 strokes on first outing.

PLaying with R7 XD iron also.

Just got back from Orlando ( on Holliday ) and found out about the PGA show there at the same time, much to the wifes disgust.

Went to the door and blagged my way in. Got hold of The TM Burner and the Superquad. Both are excellent clubs and should do really well IMHO.
