TEN TRAVEL TIPS

1. Take as much care over preparing and packing your clubs as you would the rest of your luggage. Clean and tie groups of clubs together to prevent them rattling. Keep headcovers on drivers and fairway metals.

2. Clean out your bag and its multiple pockets. You don’t want to find any melted chocolate bars or old bananas. Discard old gloves and balls. Keep tees, pitchmark repairers, ball-markers, spare softspikes and repair tool and sunscreen separate. A pristine glove and a dozen new balls should see you through.

3. Stick a broom handle in your golf bag, at least two inches longer than your longest club. This will prevent those clumsy baggage handlers from snapping the head off your favourite driver.

4. Buy a sturdy flightbag with a snap lock to cover your clubs (around £50). In transit – and particular in the mechanics of the airport carousel – they can get a hammering. | |
5. If you fly with your clubs frequently or plan to make several flights during your trip, it’s worth investing in a hard shell travel case with wheels for rolling through the airport.

6. On a pleasure trip or short business trip, especially if it’s not competitive, consider renting clubs (from £15-£40 a day). If possible, book them in advance (ask for the brand, too), together with a golf buggy if you need it. | |
7. Pack softspike shoes (you'll find most courses don’t allow metal spikes)

8. Make sure you book tee times in advance at busy courses and check your insurance, not only to cover your equipment but also if delays upset your schedule at courses where you have pre-paid.

9. When hiring a car, ensure it’s big enough to carry you and your equipment. Don’t expect to get four bulky lads and four sets of clubs in a Fiat Panda.

10. Find out about the etiquette of the place you're visiting. Be prepared to tip valets who greet you when you arrive, especially in the US. For $1-$5 they’ll clean your clubs and your shoes before and after you play.
