Luke Donald Diary: 'My big match'

Luke Donald will have brother Christian on the bag at the Accenture matchplay

I'M REALLY looking forward to this week and the Accenture World Match play in Arizona, starting on Wednesday where I've been drawn against Ben Curtis, the former Open champion in the first round. The winner will face either Vijay Singh or Soren Kjeldsen.

I'm a big fan of match play having been brought up on it during my time in England, in the US Collegiate system and in Walker Cup matches and have done quite well in this WGC tournament in the past. Last year I beat Nick Dougherty but lost out to Angel Cabrera 2 & 1 in the second round.

This time I'm going into the tournament in good form having just finished sixth in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera with a closing 68 and sitting nicely at the top of the US PGA Tour scoring averages on 69.05. It's also a good sign that I'm 6th in putting stats and tenth in sand saves.

I've played consistently in my first four tournaments of the season, with four top-25 place finishes, and two top 10s and that gives me a lot of good solid golf to build on. You never quite know how things are going to work out after taking such a long break through my wrist injury, so it was nice to get a bunch of solid tournaments under my belt.

I'm back up to 31st in the world rankings but still have to make up quite a lot of ground to where I want to be - in the top 10. We all keep an eye on the rankings through the season because it's important to be eligible for the majors and the World Golf Championships. I wasn't too concerned when I slipped down the rankings during my injury period - I couldn't control that - but I can't afford for my form to slack. However, as long as I produce the results my hard work deserves, I'll make significant progress.

Haven't yet thought much about the Ryder Cup in 2010 but as soon as the qualifying starts then it'll be on my radar. Colin Montgomerie will be a great captain for Europe, as the Ryder Cup obviously means so much to him. There is something in it that brings out the best in Monty, he's so passionate about it and that will drive him to be the best he can be at the job.

His dry sense of humour will also be an asset. He's terrific in the team room and the different dynamics of his passion and will to succeed as well as his wit, are a great mix. He's also a great motivator.

Come September, when qualifying starts, I'll be fired up to make sure I'm on that team again.

Before that there's the Race to Dubai - the former European Order of Merit - and the FedEx Cup to think about. They're a great incentive to put the work in every day and I'm determined to make a big impression in both.

In recent weeks I've been honing my skills with the latest Mizuno equipment and I’m still really happy with the MP62 irons, which should be in my bag for a long time. I've also been tinkering with several drivers, but haven't yet settled to one in particular. There are a few new things in the pipeline at Mizuno but I'm hopeful I can still get the MP-600 working the way it was before my injury.

So the World No.1 is back in action this week at the World Match Play. How do you think Tiger Woods will perform? Have you missed him or has it given you a rest from the constant barrage of Tiger topics? When you've been away from the game for long periods how have you performed? What's the toughest part of your game to retrieve?

I missed tiger. It was interesting for a bit when he was gone. However i am stoked to see him back. I think he will come back to win the Accenture this weekend. He isn't the sort of guy that will come back if he doesn't believe he can win.

I had 5 years away and it took me an age to get back to decent golf. The thing that I lacked was the mental side. Lost so many shots from poor course management.

Now, if I have a break it's the little feel shots from 50 yards and in I lose first.

Haven't missed Tiger myself, but after a short layoff I always come back with a slower and more controlled swing and score better..initially. After a long layoff, I am left frustrated at things I can't do that I used to be able to.

I think tigers absence has been a good thing its brought out alot of talent from people trying harder to win without the tiger competition.

I actually cant wait to see tiger come back to the course on tv i think his going to kick total ass !!

I haven't missed Tiger at all. It's been wonderful the last eight months not to have to put up with the constant "Tiger is the greatest ever" rubbish! Until that 19th major is his, there is only one "greatest" : Mr Nicklaus....  I haven't played for over two years by the way, but, am hoping to start again very soon. Can't wait......!

TIGER WHO???  Never missed him,It was wonderfull  for awhile not to hear his name mentioned.  The sponsors and the tour missed him ,BIG BUCKS Tiger is going to save the tour?  We will see, the economy will dictate thar The U.S. goverment wants to be reimbursed for the bailout money paid to last weeks sponsor.

Well he won his first match, 3 and 2 against Brendan Jones.   I expect the rust is off and he's tuned up and ready to go.

I usually don't play between 1st November and whenever the weather improves the following year. OMG I'm bad on that first outing in the new year. Slice, duff, hook the lot. It usually takes me a few round to get going again. This year's started well. 30pts from first round, and that's with hitting five trees. It's amazing how a golf ball manages to hit those little twigs high up, 90% air my eye, so it could have been better.

As for Tiger. Brilliant golfer, whos talent has helped golf to have a much higher profile and appeal to a much wider audience. Complete admiration for the guy.

Normally for us mere hackers a break normally goes one of two ways: You either play brillant or play total rubbish.

Sometimes a break away from golf does you good even just playing twice a week, it can become a bit routine and you become lazy in you attidute.

A weeks break can have a great revitilising effect in your game

It depends, sometimes i have a break and just go out and play when I return, sometimes I have a break and then when I return I start thinking about my swing while playing.

1 i play well, the other I don't play so well!!

I have worked out that I play my best when I play twice a week, once is OK but after a month or so I get rusty, however if I play more than that I start to get confused somehow over the shots I am wanting to hit. Twice a week keeps my mind alert and open and I can see what I want to do and do it..( notice I left out physical reasons, more than twice I have trouble moving!!)

I am glad to see him back. Cant wait to see him go at it against an on form Kim or Rory not to mention Danny Lee in a few years.

Tiger woods is OUT. Tim Clark just took him down 4-2   T.C. got the whammy on El Tigre ,this isn"t the first time he has got in Woods head. It is a young season now let the games begin.
Posted: 26/02/2009 22:44

Clark is a good player but he didnt get into Tigr head, its just tournament rust that stopped Tigr from getting the job done.
