All the golf magazines seem to be hybrid obsessed these days. I might be old fashioned but I'm looking for advice on a good old fashioned three wood that I can use off the tee and off the deck.
I'm using an R5 Dual driver with a stock shaft and love it, but just miss too many fairways.
So guys...what's the straightest and most forgiving three wood in town for an old golfer trying to claw a few shots back to single figures?

TM r7 st 3 wood, Play it off the deck from the tee and fairway, great club.

r7 boomer err given your name it would have been a surprise if you had said the ping g5 i guess. I agree though r7 3 wood fantastic club.

Mine is the trusty TM R580. Everytime I wanted to replace this old favourite, I kept hitting better shots and changed my mind to stick with it.

Another vote for the TM R580 here, best I have ever had and I have had quite a few through my mitties through the years. Second best for me has been the Adams ST series.
Unfortunately neither are current models.

r580 from the tee, deck, its brilliant. its all titanium which is rare for a 3 wood, they were pretty pricey when they came out i think mine were 199. they have a big head and face but are still very light.
there's one in the pro shop at my club for sale at the moment. i think its used but in very good nick , std tm stock reg shaft, 80 quid i think.
i can check on thursday for you if you want.

Have used a TM 'V' Steel - excellent club. Bill Woodmans were knocking them out for £79 [Graphite shaft]- £109 @ Nevada Bobs at Brodgate!

Best 3 wood is a 5 wood for me. Any 5 wood just about (18/19 deg). Longer, straighter

If your not bothered about going for the big names take a look at a KZG CH11.

I use the Taylormade 580 myself, again been tinkering with the idea of changing it but haven't found anything better yet though. Still looking.

dave bhoy. thanks for the thought, but I'm in Sydney, so I'll probably try and seek out a bargain r580 or even an old model r5 5 wood a bit nearer home! many thanks to all those who responded. Can't wait for the weekend!

I like the new Callaway Big Bertha or the taylormade v steel or the nike sasquatch2 or the taylormade ti. All of them are easy to hit, you hit them far, very forgving and you get a nice loft. Dint go for the ping g5 it is very hard to hit.

I had the original V steel with a steel shaft and it was a great club but I could never get on with their stock graphite shafts. Now switched to the Cobra LD with their stock aldila NVS shaft and love it.

Their stock graphite shafts are ultralite, thats probably why you didn't like it.I still use a V Steel 4 wood

 |
I use a Callaway Steelhead plus (not the III), which I find is absolutely the best 3 wood I've tried. Picked it up on www.golfbidder.co.uk for a good price. I'm imagining Oz has something similar? I can hit it a country mile, but I guess it's horses for courses.

I bought a Ram FX9 CG tour after using a mates. Wonderfull solid striking club off the tee and pretty good off the deck ( although the 5 wood version is better )
|
 |
I'm with a lot of others. The TM580 is still, even though it's 4 years old, the best 3-wood by far. Great of the deck and the tee and goes a long way with little effort. I can't see me changing it for a few years.

I have a Callaway X-Tour 3 wood in the bag and it is hands down the nicest fairway I've had, lovely compact head, sweet sound at impact and surprisingly forgiving. They do seem to be hard to track down, but if you ever get the chance give one a go, you won't be disappointed.

I have the TM R5 Dual 3 wood with Aldila NV55 R Shaft, It is very long and easy to hit from the tee or faiway, and it matches you driver. Played with a V Steel previously and the R5 is much much better
