We've had these at Tamworth for a couple of winters now, and i must admit you do notice the difference ( although they dont fit on my kaddystroller ) - i'm pretty sure Colin Christison - sales director at Masters Golf - used to play at Tamworth & his dad was golf pro here for a few years when I first started playing many moons ago..

At my course, Hassocks GC, everyone has to use them.

A couple of the seniors have even converted them to their electric trolleys too !

Always surprised when other courses don't use them. All our rental trolleys have hedgehogs which I am sure encourages people from other clubs to come down and play as they can use a trolley !!

So I understand from one of our pros, they were invented by a member at Mid-Sussex GC and he has recently sold the idea to Masters Golf who instantly whacked a fiver on the price !! Not sure how true that is but hey, why let the truth get in the way of a good story ??!!

WTF? What's wrong with carrying a bag ? Unless you are very old and frail, surely, the average golfer could lose a bit of weight by carrying their bag. I have nothing against trolleys but I prefer to carry my bag ; if trolleys do damage the course in winter, then one should be able to find the energy to comply.

Nick, typical response. I do carry a bag at times but since my knee went last year I can't always make it around carrying so have to use my leccy trolley. Even before that I had one anyway. I play golf for the game and the walk, not for the weight lifting.

Might get them myself as our course can get a bit boggy at times.

WTF - has it to do with you why someone should CHOOSE to do anything? People have their own reasons for choosing to pull/push a trolley.

Pity this sort of thing can't be designed to fit on a Powacaddy.

Have had Hedgehogs for 2 seasons now and play lots of courses around Bristol & South Wales (The Wetlands). Trouble is when a course has a trolley ban; it is a total ban with or without Hedgehogs. Maybe after this article/discussion more courses will take note and consider allowing this Hedgehog concession.

Has anyone actually tried these on an electric trolley? With the course being so wet at the moment I thought they may give my leccy trolley better grip on the slopes.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that because the "drive" on electric trolleys comes from the wheels which would have the Hedgehogs attached, that they would actually do much more damage to the course than normal wheels!

NS2, I have nearly always carried my bag and certainly have in the last 3 years and I can gaurantee you that I have not lost any weight by carrying my bag up to 3 full rounds a week! I am considering a leccy for one reason and one reason only, I believe that it will shave a few shots off my handicap. I am on a hilly downland course and I find it harder to drag a motorless trolley up hills so it's leccy or nothing.
Trolleys allowed all year round as it is a chalky hilly course.

I wondered about that myself but to be honest without it the wheels can spin on slopes which can't be doing the course any good either. I would have thought it would be less damaging than tining.

It could be the torque from the trolley wheels slipping the inside of the hedgehogs rather than the outer spikes

I asked one of the pros at a local club about this - hedgehogs with a powakaddy - and he suggested drilling 3 small holes in the solid wheels and using strong cable ties to fasten them on. This may stop the wheels sliding inside the hogs.

I wouldn't use hedgehogs with my Motocaddy, however I am about to "modify" my wheels with 6 zip-ties per wheel, 1 each side of each of the 3 spokes to provide bite and traction. I fail to see how hedgehogs can be any better.

Kentish. Do you mean cable ties, 6 per wheel? On a wet course they will give you about 20% extra grip for the first 100mtrs, if you are lucky. Once clogged with mud forget the effort of fitting them. Commercialism aside, Hedgehogs have about 2 + cms of effective tread and with a little ingenuity to stop the wheel spinning inside, and a little less throttle on leccy trols they should do the job.

What's a trolley ban? 

Loads of our seniors have adapted their leccy trolleys with the hedgehogs and it is the difference of them playing during the winter or not !!!

I have put hedgehog wheels onto an old set of wheels for my hillbilly, just take the old tyres off and then pop-rivet the hedgehogs on, they work just great.

Any  picies of these DIY Leccy All terain conversions ? I have fitted Hedgehogs to my original PK wheels using copper wire ( not too pretty)  but dont use them as I have pneumatic tyres on it which are fine. PKs dont have enough torque to perform wheelspin/doughnuts with Hedgehog tracks fitted.
