I tried X20's at weekend not all that keen on them and for the Big B's they just too chunky too look at after using blades for months. Will take a look at the G5 again and see what I play like should be ok I do have the G5 wood so would look good to get all G5.

.JPG) As Paul has rightly reminded us, the Mizzies are also worth taking a look at. I would also suggest taking a look at the latest Cobra irons.
I would second Creo on recommending a look at Cobra. I am currently using the S9's and really enjoy the way they strike the ball. They are also incredibly forgiving and relatively good value for money.
I am not sure what the deal is now but when I brought there were two ranges…. 3i thru PW or 4i thru GW. Because I am an impatient bugger I went with the latter options as they did not have any 3i’s in stock… Now I have GW I never use and wish I had a 3i…. Lesson learnt for next time.

I'd have a look at Snake eyes new range, they always come out near the top in independent testing and you can have them done complete with puring etc.. at a very resonable price. They don't have the advertising power of the big names and suffer consequently (see magazines are crap thread) Only problem with snake eyes is the resale value is nowhere near as high as other 'premium'?? brands.

Absolutely check out Mizuno's line of cavity backs. They would be the benchmark to compare all others. You might also look at the Pings. While I don't know anyone who has them, I did see the new line of Wilson Staff sticks, looked pretty nice.

Which ones mate, just looking on fleabay now for new ones etc. Maybe a purchase after the weekend round depending how it goes with my new swing. If i hit under 100 they been kept lol (20 year old rusty things) If not its time to change

I'm not being funny but if your shooting around the 100 mark buy yourself a good second hand set of clubs and spend the rest on lessons. You gotta b a single figure golfer to try and play with blades. Buying a new shinny set of the latest clubs wont improve your score, lessons and practicing do

Surely your local Professional would be the best bet. You may have to pay a little more but it will be worth it just for the advice and the size. My local even let me play a round with the clubs I fancied before I parted with money. Which were the same price as the nearest "superstore". You might even get lucky and find a set that somebody has traded in for this years model.

You dont have to pay thru the nose for custom fitting. I have just been Quoted £375 for Snake eye's 675's Brand new on the market. Also about the same price for KG evo's.

Well I was out on the course on Sat in Leeds and what a state the course was in. Played 3 holes and then the rain came and I meant heavy like. Got soaked and got best score ever lol. 105 had a few 8's as well. Was mainly done to cold hand as the morning was really good and the finish as i could not feel the cold any more with been so wet. Went out with some Callaway X-20's which the pro gave me for a while to try. Basically just said your going out this weekend aint you go to the shop and get the rest lol. Was so good only problem was I kept getting to the green front and coming up short by a club length. This was due to rain and winds I think. Had a good round. Got to par 3 in 1 using 3 wood. Was just short of green on a par 3 with 3 wood again. Was not that good around green with my LW though. Always hit the sole and it goes flying off the other end of green. Was so strange the ground was boggy and 2 inch of mud in some places. But the greens were lighting fast. Fastest I have ever played on.

Keiron, If you're shooting those kind of scores do yourself a favour. Leave your low wedge at home. I'll let you inot a secret it took me a long time to learn. The trick to a successful short game is the keep the ball as low as possible and getting it rolling as quickly as possible. I'll always take a putter if I can and if not the club that'll get it rolling quickest. Chip with an 8 or 9 iron unless you have no choice but to throuw it in the air. Even then you still have to hit down on the ball.
|
 |
Yeah I always tend to say to my self you dont need to hit down on the ball with a wedge 60 degree. Its true to a certain extend really but is annoying hitting it over the green. It worked a couple of times getting it in air but just over cooked it. And under cooked it at the frindge always the same like but never mind! Will get better soon already improved so much im happy still now : )

Trust me, bud, you don't need it. Until you can get up and down 50% of the time with nothing more than a PW it's a liability. If your 1st thought is, "Can I putt this?" and the answer is no your second thought should be, "what club will get it rolling like a putt quickest and easiest?" If you do this I'm sure you'll break 100 next time out.

So instead of using LW, take a 9 Iron? Or take less loft like a 4 iron. How important is your putter. I dont mean putting as in the game I mean the equipment. Just the putter I have is around 20 years old and called a Ferret or something strange. Just im looking at buying irons and I got a good 3 wood. And thinking of a driver after the round with my 3 wood. But I never took any consideration into buying a putter apart from swinging around with them in the shop for fun.

The Pro i have lessons off tells me to use a 6 iron for most of my chipping needs, unless it's quite a long bump/run on a flat surface where he gets me to use my driver (watch how many Pro's do this on the PGA etc, it's quite suprising) and open my stance out (he also makes me practice chipping using my driver as gripping down the longer shaft stops you getting wristy as it will then catch your hip if you try to flick it with the wrists, makes you concentrate on the putting type action). Well done on the score, glad you enjoyed it despite the weather.

The weather made it well hard but intresting. I mean getting onto the GIR 4 times was well good. Shame about the putting and really should of had 3 Pars rather than just the 2 : (. But I was like that aint 170 yards to pin no way. Its at least a good 190-200 and I was first away with 3 wood. Ting away she went carrying the bunker which was like so close to the green and just landing on the green. Needless to say the other 3 wandered back to the cart and took a 3 wood as well. Only shame was one of them hit it about 50 yards to the right into a small group of trees. Went for another ball next Daz went up and hit it exactly same place. And then Joe got up and hit it far over to the left in the rough. 2 groups waiting behind saw my shot and said wow that was ok. Then them 3 did that lol was well funny. Asked to T off again and then they both got just short of green. Nerves eh strange. I was so relaxed all game and just said to my self im going to enjoy this regardless and did was so funny. I prob was happiest as while in the Pro shop was looking around at buying a rain proof top. Looked at Gortex stuff which I used to have from going lakes climbing and was like HOW MUCH 200 pound for a coat. Eh no thankyou. Saw a nike one for 40 and was like these are kids what the heck. OH A SALE RACK. Wanders over wow a think sheet of plastic for 15 pound go on ill take it to replace this nasty coat I got free with my clubs from my dads old friend. Anyway got it on and it kep all the rain off my top half and was like waht a bargin lol . First bargin for years. Another T off shot with others behind us and the other 3 didn't do so well again and I was like oh Shit now im going to messs this up I better not or we going to look like right T**Ts. Ted up and whack good 220 yards right down the fairway. Jumped into Buggy and said thank F**K for that at least one of us hit it straight lol! Was such a good day I still feel happy about it now lol! P.S (Am I been sad)?

Kieron, the putter is the most important club in the bag as you'll use it more than any other. It's more important to find one you feel comfortable with that anything else. I don't like to use anything longer than an 8 iron for chipping as the club length gets in the way for me. I tend to use my 52* wedge for most shots around the green, but I'm able to open or close the face through the ball for higher or lower trajectory. But if I'm off my game I'll happily use an 8 or 9 and keep it simple. This is what you need to do.
|
 |
But what do you do if im at the front of the green just off it down a hill. Play the ball accross the floor rolling it or do what I though would be best and try chip it on with 60 degree.Yeah im not great at the moment with it but it was only a couple of month ago I was pretty useless with them silly irons of mine. I think im going to get a putter for my B-Day or something in July could ask the missus to get me one. 2nd hand scotty or something looks really sexies lol!

Kieron, Playing a lob wedge just off the green on a downslope will almost always end in a disasterous thin, due to the loft of the club. I often play that kind of shot with a putting stroke using PW or 9 iron, but always ensuring my body is angled according to the slope. If it's down hill, you want to be leaning into the green, with shoulders and hips mirroring the slope. If it's uphill, do the opposite, but don't try and scoop the ball; trust the loft of the club. Putters - find one you like and stick with it (agree with 23rdman)... I generally spend more on my putters than my drivers! Glad to hear you're enjoying the game despite the weather.

It does seem that most of us are prepared to shell out £200 for a driver but gasp at anything over £50 for a putter! It makes very little sense! I've been pi**ing about for a while now with a few different putters but have gone back to an old White Hot 2-ball. I'm going to get a couple of inches hacked off it- just find a putter that gets your eyes over the ball. I had 33 putts yesterday - a record for me and just 2 x 3 putts. Never missed one from within 6 feet. It's a confidence thing more than anything else!
