When was the last Englishman to win a major?. says RELOADER Faldo 1996 US Masters. Last Scotsman Lawrie 1999 The Open In the last twenty years the tally is 6 English wins, 2 Scottish wins. This isn't a 'typical anti scots dig',but you asked the question.I have many Scots friends ,and some cannot hide their glee when something happens to the English(like being knocked out of competitions, the latest being the European cup). Many more English supporters will give a shout for the Scots(including me)than the otherway round. Chip on the Scots shoulders, you bet. It's a pity the four nations can't pull together.

KeefT In your criticism of my post and your own hate-filled criticism of other British sporting figures from motor racing and golf you mentioned Andy Murray as a "only a tennis pro, for God's sake" Well, he may play tennis but he doesn't play it like a pro but like a talented amateur. Compared to a GREAT pro like Nadal and to Djokovic he is really pathetic and his attitude screams out to his opponents that his mind and body are not ready for the tough life of a top tennis player! Frankly, I doubt if he will ever achieve a physique, stamina and the mental strength needed to go much further than he has done. Finding the right coach also seems a problem for him. Altogether Murray is hardly in mint condition and certainly unworthy of taking on the mantle of Tim Henman.

Thus far, Murray's tennis seems to bear most comparison to Miroslav Mecir (Olympic champion in 1988). All the shots in the book, capable of beating anyone on his day - but never consistent enough over a fortnight to win a Grand Slam event. But as I say, I hope I'm wrong.

Looks like about 2 hours from now Reloader! Westy going great guns at the moment! DOH, ~ Looks like he Caught the English disease and Choked!

Boa, I was not trying to criticise your post, I was merely pointing out that all the tennis players out there have their moments of indescretion on court. My point is that I think Murray gets an excessive amount of criticism for the 'crimes' he has commited. Possibly due to the fact as a British player, he gets far more (possibly undeserved) coverage than others in the tournament. Your entitled to your opinion, as am I, and quite frankly I don't really give a shit so I'm out of here. As for my 'hate-filled' criticism of other sportsman, give me a break, it was tongue in cheek.
|
 |
KeefT Actually I thought that your tongue-in cheek comments were extremely accurate. There is something faintly nauseous how this nation overpraises our sports "stars" one moment only to knock them down again. I suppose that the trouble is because SO many of them are really rather horrible! It takes a rea plonker to parade his wealth in the way that Wayne Rooney apparently spent £5 MILLION on his wedding

Whatever anyone thinks of Murray, the game tonight has been edge of the seat stuff. Reminds me of the atmosphere Henman used to get

No matter what the sport, we seem to love in this country (Britain) to knock our top sportsmen. So they may not be the best in the world but we then moan if they "only" make it in the top 10 and then take great delight in bringing out their bad points. I think tonight, at least, Murray showed he is made of pretty stern stuff and to battle back like he did takes a lot of character. I see it often on the BBC sporting blogs where people take a delight in knocking down our high achievers. So Henman never won a Grand Slam event, he still pretty much held British tennis on his shoulders for 10 years (yes with a good bit of help from Rusedski). For once, lets get behind our lads instead of delighting in knocking them back. As an Englishman living in Scotland, I can understand the apparent "chip" on the shoulder shown by the Scots. It's because of the way that life revolves around Southern England and not much else (I originate from NW England). As an example I was watching a programme the other night talking about the English wine renaissance and then proceeded to interview the owner of a vineyard in Scotland!

fair play to the lad, hope he goes all the way. Why i had a go at him was because he always appears to find an injury from somewhere...nowt to do with where he's from.

all you had to do was watch the footie finals last night.
according to motson etc., virtually everything exciting came from an english premier league player. they weren't spanish or german, they were liverpool, chelsea, arsenal etc. irritating to an extreme. constant references to england. why??? then they wonder why the other home nations and neutrals slag them off fyi . i am not scottish, although i live here

Personally, I coundnt give a F is hes a miserable anally retentive neurotic, as long as hes a winner...spare me from awefully Nice but gutless Tims anyday. Gawd I miss the tantrums of McEnroe and Nastase....winners Thats also one of the reasons peeps like Tiger...he shows his emotions...good or bad...just imagine what golf would be like if Goosen won as much as Tiger...peeps would switch off in droves.

Henman was an average pro but of course he's of good stock... blah blah blah God he really upset you lot with that little quip about anybody but England winning. I read that Odious little twerp Parsons column in the Daily Mirror today. An man with his head up his own rectum. 'Thats also one of the reasons peeps like Tiger...he shows his emotions...good or bad...just imagine what golf would be like if Goosen won as much as Tiger...peeps would switch off in droves.' You're arguement of people switching off in droves if there were two players winning as much as each other is nullified in that statement. If someone/anyone went out and matched Woods week in week out i'm sure it would attract more people to watch to see who would win. Oldboy - England has 9/10 times the population? What's the total england/scotland totals? Last 20 years - 89 90 96 Masters. 90 92 Open - I take it you you extended to get the Faldo 87 victory to up the statistics?

Damon, the "anyone but England" comment was clearly a joke (one of his funnier ones, in fact, given he was winding up Henman), and can be discounted. It was his former habit - apparently dropped this year, I'm pleased to see - of wearing the flag of Scotland rather than that of the UK which says to an Englishman "I am not British" and invites us not to support him. However, I think last night's terrific match - both in terms of drama and the quality of the tennis - has healed the rift, all the fans of Britain are behind him, and he won't be Scottish again until Nadal dumps him on his backside on Wednesday, will he Boa? . Oh, and howler, there was a good reason why Motty didn't point out all the players from Rangers, Celtic and Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Euro final... it just escapes me for a moment.

I never realised there was such a large group of "little England", anti-Scottish arseholes on this site. Boa, I really hope you, and people like you, are the fag end of the "End of Empire", pith helmet wearing Little Englanders. Make sure you send me an invite to your funeral. I'll happily turn on the gas / lift the first shovel to help you on your way to that BNP meeting in the sky.

has all this got out of hand? murray played well and i hope he will get through, he is a brit, a scot or whatever! he is our only chance of the uk winning wimbledon, so give him a chance. i support by a hierarchy : english, uk, europe (divisble by my favourite european country - germany and portugal being last) - rest of the world and the universe, then USA or australia. lets not take it too personal, at the the end of the day the world still keeps turning - except the Ryder Cup...
