What is the best route to go in buying a set of clubs for the wife.
Hybrid set, half set, 9irons and 3 woods ??

Do we go for graphite or steel shafts ??
any advice would be gratefully appreciated on anyone who has purchased womens clubs.

Cheers

Mark..

My wife has been playing for about 6 months, but hasnt quite made the jump to playing regularly.

Depends a little on "size and strength" but in general, graphite is best. My wife has real trouble with irons, but bashes a lofted wood a good distance! I would start with some woods and some short irons/wedges!

I got her a full set of irons from ebay, but she spent mopre on soem decent second hand woods and carries driver, 3, 5, 7, wood, and only 8, 9, W, SW irons.

And she's no slouch with the putter!

Start with some lessons too!

i tried to get the missus into golf but she was having none of it - i have a hippo giant plus titanium 12 degree ladies driver for sale if you are interested.

Great driver for the ladies, that one.
Jillbo has a full set of those up to a seven wood and they are easy to hit and go a long way too.
Graphite as Ian said,so they can generate more club head speed,we bought the camber soled, oversized heads Wilsons and they go great to in the irons.Hybrids are a good choice as most women prefer the sweep of the hybrids and woods to the punch of the irons.

My missus used to play years ago before we had kids and came out for a game last year on a if you can't beat 'em kind of thing. She took out my sons(11)clubs and whacked her first shot with a 3 wood 50 yards over the green at the 130 yard 1st. She reckons the shorter, lighter clubs with thinner grips were fantastic, she had a bit of bother with the short game and putting but hardly missed a shot from the tee or fairway.

From the horse's mouth, so to speak, (albeit an old horse who plays off nine)I would thoroughly recommend any woman now taking up golf to start with the hybrid sets I've seen (like Taylor-Made). 3W, 3R, 5/7R, 7-8-9-P-S and putter. Majority of women can't handle long irons, they don't have the strength in their wrists and forearms to produce the ball-turf "pinch" for launch. Graphite shafts (for same reason)and not 'oversize' heads.

I heard a great tip once, for golf starters. Learn the game backwards from the green - start with the putting, then the chipping, then the approach shots, then the long stuff. Anyone else ever tried this?

And begging Secret Ace's pardon, most MEN I know can't handle stiff-shafted clubs - although many buy them in haste, to repent at leisure (to sell them on, you have to find some other bloke who spends his golfcourse life in an ego-macho-driven coma - although that shouldn't be too difficult, there are lots of them....I beat them regularly).

I wish your wife all the best of luck.

Ow... will the Ace get back up before the 10 count? :)

Nope. He's out for the count.

Patricia:
Yes, thats the way Tiger Woods larned to play golf.
I did the same a year ago and in 16 months went from HCP 36 to 7.

2 years ago I purchased a medium price set of Lynx graphite shafted irons and 3,5,7, woods. The woods new cost £60 each. I had never played golf before so did'nt want to spend too much in case I did'nt get on with the game.

I now play off 12 and still use the same clubs. I beleive all this hype about really expensive clubs is a load of rubbish.

I have added a driver, lob wedge and a rescue wood to my bag since but that's all.

Good luck to your wife, I hope she falls in love with the game as much as I have. (Not sure my golfing widower husband would agree though).

Well said Patricia, I've seen a few snide sexist remarks from Ace here and there. One day he'll grow up and when he's a man he'll come back and apologise.

A lady-golfing friend of mine also uses Lynx clubs, and gets on well with them. I think they would be a good choice.

What i would like to know is who is doing the shopping and ironing whilst our better halfs are playing golf ?
(only joking my wife plays often)

Harvey Pennick (of the "Little Red Book" series) always said start at the green and learn golf backwards.
