I personally use a Callaway Steelhead III 7 wood with a steel shaft.....IMHO it is the club I rely on the most in my bag......my playing partner bought one a couple of weeks ago and he says the same......it is down to personal preference at the end of the day

Sounds good but a little too expensive for me though...
Any one used "cheaper" clubs...donnay for example?

I think there's been a couple of threads about 7 woods in the past. If you do a search on the forum header page, I'm sure you'll find them.

I've got a Hippo 7 wood which cost about £35, I use it off the fairway instead of a 4 iron.

A friend of mine (plays off 6) laughed when I told him I was considering getting a 7 wood: he said get a 2 iron, you pussy. Not helpful, but there's clearly a stigma about these lofted woods, which puts me off. I expect to be berated for this.

Well I thought a 7 wood was easier to use etc than a 2 iron...

It's all very well for a 6 handicap to laugh but for the everyday golfer I think they are an excellent club. And there are more and more people using them at my course. What would you prefer? For someone to make a silly comment about using a 7 wood and then having to swallow their woods when you blast it down the fairway? Or go for the "macho" option of a 2 or 3 iron and mess up more shots than you hit? One of my friends has just got a 7 wood after struggling with his 3 & 4 irons and is delighted with it.

If you're not too sure, the Donnay is not a bad idea as at £15 then what have you got to lose? I would go for the steel shaft for consistency. If you decide you like it then you can always go for a more expensive club later.

Somebody here may make some comment about the Donnay but it's a good way to try out first and does work. I play with a guy who uses the Donnay Driver, 3 & 5 wood and hits them well. One guy in a local shop said the Donnays aren't actually bad clubs, they just don't last as long (and it wasn't a Donnay shop).

Other than the Donnay, you can get Hippo and Dunlop fairway woods at a low price. Only comment I would say is that those with some form of weighting to the sole of the tends to make it easier to get the ball in the air.

I am using a Ping ISI 7 wood. IMHO it is the best club in my bag (for a high handicapper like me). It gives me great confidence. I don't carry the 3 and 4 irons anymore.

The Taylor Made Rescue Club with Bubble shaft works for me.

what is the price tag though?

I got a 7 wood for my Dad last christmas, he hasn't stopped thanking me yet! Ignore antone's comments, it's what suits your game, I play with plenty of single figure handicappers who swear by them.

If your buying cheap then look hardest at the quality of the shaft in the club, go for steel rather than graphite. I would recommend John Letters JLX at about £60 a club, their getting hard to find now though. How about second hand, loads of 7 woods on ebay.

I lost form with my long irons so I tried a 7 wood. I bought a Wilson from JJB for £25 to see if I liked it. Cheapest club by far in my bag but easiest to hit. Might save for a "better quality one " but can't see why.

...ain't no reason why, if you hit it that well. Have a go of the "better quality" one and ask, "Do I hit this better?" You'll know!

I am a single figure player and can hit long irons fine but I have to say I only use a 2 iron when it is windy and use an original Callaway Steelhead 7 wood which I love. I sometimes have the long irons and the 7 wood in the bag at the same time as they play different trajectories. Go for it you will not regret it other than trying to decide what clubs to drop to make up the 14 allowed clubs!!

I'm not a particulary long hitter but when playing with some people on monday, i teed off with my seven wood and equaled there shots with the driver and 3 woods.

I even prefer to play out of the rough than the fairway cos it performs so well.

7-woods are brilliant. Ignore the comments that often go with them from more able golfers, a 7-wood can be the saviour of the normal club golfer if you ask me.

I don't go anywhere without my VFT 7 wood. It was expensive, even second-hand but has proved to be invaluable. Its a banker club, I can hit it straight, high and get acceptable results not matter what my swing is doing on the day. I would recommend you get a 7 wood you feel comfortable with that fits in with your price range. One word of caution though, some 7 woods can be very low profile (the last Mizuno series 2000/01 for example) and they can be a bit of a handful to control.

Well I have just bought a donnay graphite shafted Pitching wedge so maybe a 7 wood soon!

I note the last of these comments was October 2002. Well it is now Feb 2004 and advances have been made. I started with a steel Donnay 7 wood and really enjoyed the confidence it gave me. As an ex cricketer I do not have a massive back lift but can still get this to go about 180 yds. So building on this success I have just bought a steelhead 3 Callaway 7 wood-still good-goes straight and makes a lovely PING. Also recommend the Two ball Oddesey putter; it has saved me about 5 shots a round. Ireally am putting much straighter.

Today's Golfer ran a pretty comprehensive test on 7 woods recently.

You can read the comments on the MP-001 7 wood on www.mizunoeurope.com

golf / menu / independant reviews.

You might be able to get a back copy of the magazine through EMAP publishing.

Use whatever clubs you need to get the ball in the hole in less shots. Forget the 6 handicapper or anyone else for that matter that scoffs they're idiots, forget the macho bull; if it feels right for you then it probably is.
