I was at a swing simulator today and tried out two different drivers. The 400cc and the 460cc Callaways and found out that my swing speed were between 90/95 mph for the 400cc and only 75/80 mph for the 460cc driver. And the distance of the drivers cover between 180 to 240 yards with the drive of the 460cc consistently under 200 yards. Now that's a real surprise to me and its interesting for those that are considering a big-head driver because the end result would be your driving distance will be less. The factory rep was there and he explained about the wind resistance. As a parallel he compare placing a palm out the window while the car is travelling at 90 mph and one would immediately find out how difficult it becomes trying to keep you hand still with the wind resistance buffeting at your hand. Now with our stretched arm its still nowhere close to the length of a 45" so one could imagine how the swing speed affects the distance. Now I know why my 460cc TM XR-05 CTR is such a dog and it will be up for sale at Ebay.

I read in a golf mag of a survey amongst pros. Those whose sponsors pay them millions to swing the latest briefcase on stick obviously do so. Those that have free choice usually go for a 330 - 400cc driver as the best compromise of size (decent size hitting area vs. small for head-speed). You'll often find that the "Tour" version of driver is smaller than the cooking version - TM R7 is only 400cc.

It's about sweet spot not distance. A larger headed driver enables us hackers to 'middle' the ball more often.
Do another test - try the average driving distance of say 20 strikes between 400 and 460cc drivers - only counting balls that hit the fairway.

We all know that a 460cc head have a bigger sweet spot than a 400cc. However, its the lost of distance that concerns me after I found the sweet spot on both of these drivers.

Henry - I play a 460cc driver. I've played every size from about 300cc onwards.
I'm hitting this one just as far as the others.

I think that's a good point Henry.

I've used 360, 400 & 450, and have found the 400 to give the best distance, and most accurate FOR ME. Its what we keep saying on here, whats good for one, may not be so good for others.

360 for me,just like how it sits behind the ball.

i love my titleist 975l fe size, 350cc. another thing is the ping g5 460cc, if it is then its the only 460cc club i can hit any good

I went from a 400cc head to a RAM FX9 460cc driver and believe me i havent lost distance at all but i have lost accuracy BIG TIME!!!HELP............................
|
 |
400 max especially off winter mats.

I struggle with anything above 360cc - feels clumsy, and unwieldy. And, yes, I suspect SS is lower for me.

I hit the 400cc Mizuno MP001 and the Callaway VFT 360 about 50 yards less than the King Cobra 454 Comp unlimited ( high COR version )and the Nike Ignite 460+ !! I now have a legal COR Callaway FT3 and hit it further than all of them........... all with the same slow crappy swing that I always use !!! I really think shaft flex and its compatability with the individuals swing is the biggest factor in swing speed at impact and consequently the speed of the ball off the face, which is the governing factor on how far the ball will go ( speed wise )We then have to consider launch angle and spin rates, so as ever I will end with ...... one mans meat is another mans poison !!!
