All things being equal, will the steel shaft give me more backspin compared with graphite ?

mine do, but then again ive gone from progen with graphite to titleist 690.cb with steel lol

I would have thought that graphits shafts would produce more spin because they are lighter so you can create faster clubhead speeds?

I would have thought its the other way round if anything. To get more back spin it's normal to increase the club head speed. You would normally increase clubhead speed if yo use the same swing with graphite shafts. However with a switch to graphite then you could lose direction and have to change to a slightly firmer shaft to control the club. Similarly if you currently play graphite with good direction control the switch to steel may mean a loss of direction control. Until you learn to adjust your swing to the shafts that is.

If you are thinking of this sort of change then switching to lighter weight steel shafts will have the same effect.

What ball do you play.

My ball of choice is the "Noodle". It gives me adequate spin and I like the feel on the green. However, my Mizuno MX-23 comes with graphite light and I think its a bit too wimpy when I want a crispy chip to enable some backspin.

Spin is only created through contact or friction.

Technically speaking spin cannot in any way be "created" by a shaft.

That being said however, graphite when looked at as a "weight" instead of a "material" you will find that lighter shafts, generate slightly more swingspeed, and thusly more backspin, shot for sot.

But again, shafts cannot "create" spin

Softer tipped shafts will create more ball spin.. eg rifle spinner wedge shafts.

As a general rule graphite shafts are higher torque than Steel, thus they will create a bit more back spin due to their softer tips and thus a higher usually longer ball flight.

I read even Mickelson is experimenting with grahite shafts in his wedges.

Henry switching the ball to a Noodle 'Rotini' will increase the spin rate without going to an expensive ball.

The ordinary Noodle is not classed as a high spin ball
