worm - just because i have a high handicap does not make me thick. not that i've posted on this thread since stating what shaft i used! :)

brian - usually right (big slice), but I reckon this was to do with my body coming round quicker than my arms in an attempt to power the drive, therefore bringing the club face across the ball.

Whats handicap got to do with knowledge of golf equipment?

 Let Exmax answer this.
A shaft that is too soft for your swing speed or swing type (agressive loading) will tend to produce more left shots and hooks.
A right handed Pro come's to you for fitting Exmax, you tell him to hit a straight shot to a target and hand him a regular flex, he takes and swings the club at 120mph hitting the ball. Where would the ball land relative to the target?
Maybe then you could explain the concept to some people of a stiff shaft, if you dont swing it fast enough you dont need to worry about squaring it up as it has never loaded opening the face at all, if its square at address it should be square at impact, unless other things are going on.

In my experience, a shaft that is too stiff will generally produce a straighter (i.e reduced side spin), lower ball flight and you will loose distance because the shaft is not loading properly.
More flexible shafts will exaggerate the effects of a swing; the ball will travel further & higher and any side-spin will also be exaggerated and result in spraying. In my opinion, generally speaking, unless the shaft is far too flexible for you, shaft flex is unlikely to turn a ‘slicing’ swing into a draw or a hook. There is some element of a weak shaft promoting a hook etc. but this is by far overshadowed by the quality of swing (swing path, tempo & direction clubface is facing at impact).
To answer the original question, I currently use a regular flex Accuflex evo in my driver.

 80-85 with a driver.
I tried out a few drivers, to be honest the stiff shaft though it felt different, but not worse than the regular. I guess I'll just bow to greater knowledge on this one and get a regular flex shaft - afterall I'm purchasing under a hundred quid, so I'm not going to die if I change up in six months or so.
One quick off-topic; don't hear much about Yonex drivers, but the Pro was really trying to sell me one, not sure the model but it wouldn't have been top of the range.

Yonex seem to be overpriced for what they are.
For undr £100 you could get some of the reduced price Wilson Staff drivers at Direct-Golf.

I was thinking of the Pd5 in other threads, doesn't seem to be overwhelming support for it though.

Back to flex though - is it logical to get the same shafts on your 3 wood as your driver?
|
 |
tin pot - i'm not sure about same shaft in 3wood and driver.
For me - my swing on my driver off a tee is much faster and harder than my 3 wood which also has to cope with off the deck shots which requires more accuracy and a slower more controlled.
i have stock regular in my r7 and a steel r300 in my 3woods (both the miz mp001 and jjb slazenger special)
(i am looking to try a stiff shafted driver soon as i think i'm getting up there now with improved technique)

I have always thought the same thing as Brian, obviously its more complicated than that.
Someone said that the clubhead at impact goes past the middle of the shaft which he said would make the ball go left due to closed face.
Which would mean the golf swing is slower at impact than further back in the swing?
Or is the clubhead still just rebounding from the change of direction in the swing at the top of the swing?
edit: A link to a website which explains all the physics of a golf swing would be very helpful but maybe thats pushing it.

The Draw System written by Nick Bayley from New Zealand may be able to solve golfers' slice problems no matter what shaft flex is, I think. Suggest you should try it. You can find it on google. Good Luck! David

I use a Grafalloy Pro Launch Blue in Stiff - this was the original question wasn't it??? And if you gave Tiger a Ladies driver he would probably hit the thing straight!!!

I have an old Taylormade 320 Ti. I'm twelve and i have a stiff shaft. I must admit stiff is so much better than regular. My drives are on average 200m.

Dutch Scotsman Don't be expecting too much from these old farts. They try to convince you that they know all this technical stuff about shafts, but they don't even know the difference between too/to and lose/loose. And that's in their native language. How do you trust them to know about shaft flex when basic English is proving such a problem? And don't get them started on metres vs. yards. "I'm twelve and i have a stiff shaft. I think that we all remember those days......

MagicPlusFours, Thanks, I actually live in Holland. (hence the name) We all work in metres. I think it is easier but i am sure the "old farts' will disagree. Nice hearing from you!
