How many of you think you'll be buying one of the square drivers. The science seems sound behind them, the magazines (surprise, surprise) say they're great.

Personally, I'll be waiting till they've been out for a while and see what people think, then maybe try one out. I'm probably in the majority.

The Callaway FTI looks very appealing to me, although at that kind of money it's pathetic, a pure marketing con, I'll wait a year or so when more OEM'S start making Square drivers then and look again then.

yes totally agree with you peter. i think i will wait for the hype and prices to fall.feedback from some golf mags suggest you will hit it straighter but not any further.this doesnt appeal to me at the moment as i am not a long hitter and i am always looking for extra distance.i will probably try one anyway.i think it is always best to try for yourself as you can read to much in to hype in magazines.i have just bought an ft3, so i will give this a few months anyway.

There is one born every minute and it appears to be me. Can't wait for my club to get all the demo clubs in so I can try them out on the course.

I've got an XQ Muto on the way. It gets a good name and costs a 1/3 of what the Nike and Callaways do. I'm after accuracy and forgiveness at this point. Booming it 270 yards or more can wait. If I can hit the Muto up to about 230 yards and straight I'll be happy. As my game improves, who knows, maybe I'll be able to hit it 270 yards or so.

At lot of people on here say the right club for the right player. If a square driver is right for me then who is anyone else to comment? The same goes for chippers and long handle putters etc. if you don't want one then don't buy one. As long as the club is legal it's no one elses business what you have in your bag. I'm sure there was uproar back when metal woods first appeared.

I won't be going square.
Square drivers are right up there with all the other gimmicky golf tat that I abhor.
Two ball putters (and other spud mashers)
Irons with plastic crap in the back
Golf shoes with R-soles for extra distance
Golf clubs with half B&Q's nut and bolt section attached.
Putters that are not freely swung from a single grip


I will campaign tirelessly to humiliate the duffers who use them

Taz you're not using a 460cc titanium driver with graphite shaft are you ? I hate people who don't use persimmon woods with steel shafts... bloody cheats if you ask me !! ;-)

I'vre tried the Nike SQ2...hated its looks but the club performed OK...pretty straight and similar distance to my existing driver but nothing special.

Also tried the Cally Fti the other night...quite like its quirky looks but the stiff Fujikura shaft in it is a POS for me all I could do with this club was put great big high slices into the air.

Two clubs hit....current impressions arent great, I certainly wont be buying one. Might try getting hold of a clone head (like an Integra) and putting my own shaft preference in and seeing how that goes.

The FTi was a real possibility for me this year, (pending demo results), however I just recently picked up a tour issued Taylor Made R5 TP with stiff Diamana 83 shaft for less than a 3rd of the FTi's retail and let me tell you....The R5 TP is the real deal!

Ps. I do think that the 'square thing' will be nothing more than a passing fad.(not that I wouldn't have partaken!!!)

Was talking to my local pro earlier - he reckons the fad will pass, as soon as a few mugs buy 'em and their clever mates try 'em.
He did say - out the middle of the bat there is no diff whatsoever. They may be more forgiving for crap players though.
His recommendation for top driver - "You cannot beat a Taylor Made 580 with a shaft that suits you"

Just bought of Ebay FT-3 with Aldilla NVS Stiff 65grams shaft. costed me £94.

Wait a year and square driver (used ones) we will get for a hundred if we want one :)

Taz - funny you said that .. i still use my R580XD with NVS shaft ... tried R7 and it didn't hit any longer. We will see with FT-3 be any longer :)

I go to all the demo days (my pro is a main agent for most manufacturers) and have still yet to find anything better. Although I do feel it is mainly because I have found a shaft that is totally suited to my swing.

I put the same shaft in a real cheapy head and got nearly the same results.

My R540 Tour with the same shaft in works just as well but has less loft so I stick with the R580, the R540 Tour is probably what I will revert to in 2008. Trouble is that is not what the manufacturers want to hear.

I have the XQ Muto with Grafalloy Blue65 regurlar shaft and it is great. I have now found the the correct shaft for me as I also have this shaft in the Ben Ross S4 3wood. I tried the stiff Blue65 but found it too stiff, even though I swing at around 105mph with a driver. Switched back to the regurlar (only cost £2 postage back to 14clubs.com) and now hitting the furthest and straightest I have ever hit.
Sunday, par 4 up hill, do not know yardage,
ended up 10yds from the front edge of the green (last 10 yds is very steep up hill).
Never hit this far before and hopefully in the spring/summer I might be able to reach the green.

Now, comments above have got me thinking.
I have a TM R580XD spare, what if I change the shaft to a Blue65 Reg? Will it mean I am then competing with the big boys or will it trash my game? I reckon it might be worth finding out.

If you are sure that the shaft is right then give it a shot ... if it will not work out then you still got your current driver that you can play with ...

taz, disagree with some of your comments on gimmicky equipment. i think the two ball putter is the best thing since sliced bread. dont fancy square drivers though. think they will die off quickly.what next a square golf ball?
