What type of clubs for a 12 year old?

My two sons (14 and 12) just finished their first 18 holes toggether on a school outing. Both really enjoyed the day. My 14 year old has a half set of Howson clubs some bought by ourselves and spome he has bought. The 12 year old is playing with some pretty old kids clubs which are now too small for him.

Question is this what is the best way forward for him for another set of clubs? Seen some junior Howson sets for £70 but as they may well only last him a couple of years is it worth it? Or should I look around for some decent 2nd hand clubs or even some ladies clubs? Any thought and probably more importantly experiences welcome. The 12 year old really seems to like playing and doesn't do many other sports on a voluntary basis.

Thanks

I think that until you know how seriously he is going to play, you would be better off keeping things basic. Either a junior set or perhaps 2nd hand ladies clubs. My son started using ladies clubs when he was 11 and has only just stopped using them, having now progressed onto mens' spec irons and woods. He is now 13 and as his irons are standard mens length, hopefully his current set should last for a good few years.

Hi Ken,
I would probably say go with a set of ladies clubs because thats what the pro at my club advised me to do with my nephew that is of the same age. You can pick up really good value sets and they are not at all giry looking and they will surely take him through to him either growing into an adult or untill he gets hos first job and can buy his own!!;-)

Ladies clubs are good in many respects. They have softer flex shafts and more loft, as well being shorter and lighter. USUALLY!
I state this 'cos many budget sets that advertise "ultra-light" shafts etc aren't. Kids and ladies (beginners, high h'cap) would normally be playing 50-65g shafts, and some of those "ultra-light" budget things are more like 100g and lousy.
Mens A-flex (sometimes called senior flex) will be just as good.
Ladies and mens heads are the same size and weight, just the higher loft on the ladies.
My son is now 10 and started out with one of those terrible ladies sets. Now plays mens A-flex to ladies length in irons, mens std length and flex woods and driver. Has no problem hitting his Nike SQ that is one inch longer than mine.
