After slipping and 'doing' my ankle on a wooden footbridge and then sliding down a muddy bank on my a*se I finally decided to remove my beloved Champ Scorpions in favour of steel spikes.
What a difference - I didn't realise that I was wary of my footing all the time in slippery conditions. Now I've got the proper jobbies in - No fear! Tractor traction once more. Take my advice all you plastic cleat lovers:-
Bin 'em for the winter, before you hurt yourself.

Yeah, I went A over T last week on slippery wooden steps up to a tee. I'll have to change mine too. Good warning Al.

I always find mine are bunged up with mud and grass in the winter and i spend so much time clearing them on each tee. Now bought some metal spikes, need to see how they go.
One thing I noticed though is the number of coursews that don't allow metal spikes on there courses!

Chris - check out whether it is a requirement in winter. A lot of courses, mine included, relax the 'cleats only' rule in the winter for safety reasons.

Thank Alan, I thought it was funny in winter, especially with winter greens and tees.

I wear Mucker boots with steel spikes and as well as supporting my ankles the steel spikes grip better in winter conditions.
I'd definitely recommend them for winter golf that is if steel spikes are allowed on your golf course.

Just a thought - if a course does not let your wear metal spikes - will they insure you if you fall over and break an ankle if you are wearing sdoft spikes?
In the USA, wouldn't that be grounds for serious litigation?
I agree, soft spikes in the winter are bloody dangerous - we should be allowed to wear cleats! People should have a choice and greenkeepers should put up with the odd spike mark again - not that the soft spikes are any better, in fact, they are probably more culpable for spike marks on ncie greens!

Can you get metal spikes with the Black Widow fast-twist system?
|
 |
Played a course today with a very good friend and his club insists on soft spikes. Ordinarily I don't have an issue, but the course at 10 this morning was like a skating rink and still the rule applied - madness.

In the states apparently, if steel spikes are not allowed, then they have to put rubber mats on slippery surfaces (wooden walkways ,steps etc.) - to prevent litigation.
|
 |
Nick,Yes you can fast twist metals.
|
 |
Thanks Andrei, I'll look out for some then.

Hi Andrei, I've searched on the web for a metal fast-twist black widow replacement and can't find anything. Could you point me in the right direction if possible please?
Thanks in advance, Graeme
