Does anyone have a formula for calculating the swing speed of different clubs ? For example given a parameter of : A driver SS of 100 mph, what will be the equivalent SS of a #5 iron ?
A spreadsheet with the formulas will be very helpful in determining the SS for all clubs. Thanks !

I've seen quoted that it's assumed somebody who has a SS of 100 mph for the driver is 'likely' to have a SS of around 80-85 mph for the mid irons , again though , how that correlates I have no idea ?
it's reckoned that 1 mph of swing speed from a driver equates to 2.5 yards in distance with all things being equal (ie: launch angle , square face , angle of attack , loft , etc ...) thus somebody having a 100 mph SS with a driver is approx. possibly likely to hit the ball 250 yards carry
I've had a quick scan through an academic journal search engine and couldn't find anything (not sure I'd understand it if I did). However, if I remember my basic physics, the following should apply:
(1) all other things being equal, the longer the club, the faster the swing speed. Someone with a more mathematical brain should be able to work out a basic formula to describe this. However, before anyone gets too carried away with the concept, remember that the longer the club, the harder it is to control (and you need to factor in shaft flexibility, weight, etc). So whilst a longer shaft will increase speed on its own, other factors may militate against this (e.g. failure to hit the ball as squarely).
(2) the lighter the club, the faster the swing speed. Longer clubs tend to be heavier (just ignore the wedges for the moment), so there should be some balancing out between the swing speeds of longer and shorter clubs because of this. But a lighter club will not necessarily hit the ball further. Newton demonstrated that force = mass x acceleration. If you increase the acceleration of a club at the same time you decrease its mass, the force applied by the club to the ball may not alter all that much.
gave honest answers to how far I'd expect to carry a 5 iron (165 yards) as well as the rest of the stuff it asks for (age , h'cap ability , body build , etc ...)
likewise I altered the loft settings on the clubs section to reflect my own clubs
according to the results that came back , and bearing in mind it's taken my 5 iron as 165 yards , the other irons came in fairly accurate give or take the odd few yards -- fair enough I'd expect that
it did say PW = 115 yards ?? -- most odd , I'd have most likely thinned it to get that far !
driver = 245 yards ?? -- hmmm , I wish ! -- in order for me to carry driver 245 yards I'd need some breeze behind on a bit of a downhill hole
Bingo alk3! I'm discarding the wedge numbers because short irons are more of a feel shot and if I need a chart for it, chances are I wouldn't find the green for the entire round.
Paul, I'm with you on the driving distance. With my average driver swing speed of around 90, inclusive of "carry" and "roll" I average about 220.
i was testing this on a lesson the other day the fastest i could swing my 7 iron was 76mph though that was with out a ball.
Getting a bit confused at the moment one minute im thinking about swing temp and having a nice easy swing, then im being told my impact speed is well too slow
