I just received a new driver, Powerbilt Slugger, which has an Aldila VS Proto 65R 350 shaft on it. Looking on the Aldila website, they don't seem to do a 65. I was under the impression that this was a new shaft, but i'm thinking that it may be last seasons shaft? Aldila numbering for this shaft runs at VS Proto 60, 70 & 80.

Mine says 65R.

I bought this driver from a Pro Shop through ebay and it was listed as brand new and with a Stiff shaft. The grip also looks a bit grubby which suggests to me that they've had it in the shop for some time. Doesn't look like it's been used though. And, what difference would i see with the stiff shaft?

So, question is, where do i stand and should i just play it and see how i get on with it - a chance i was taking getting a stiff shaft anyway.

Alot of the time manufacturers order shafts for their clubs that are slightly different than if you bought the shaft seperately. I have a hogan 5 wood with an aldila shaft 70g that has a couple of other different letters on it.

Hi golfer 24,

the Ben Hogan c-455 fairway wood had a Aldila NV 70-H shaft as standard.  5g extra weight and with a different kick point, I think to encourage a higher ball flight.  Apart from that it was pretty much the same as the normal Aldila NV 65.

Peter - does it look like the shaft is older than the head?  The VS proto is the hot new shaft at the moment.  Call me cynical but it does make you wonder if the seller has swapped the new shaft for an old one in the hope that you wouldn't notice.  What shaft was this particular club advertised as having?

It will be an OEM shaft,so its different to a custom ordered shaft, this they will order individually for you,the OEMs are ordered in bulk. They have to give them different specs to easily identify them, particularly in the Ebay age.

If you ask for a VS Proto and its stock this is what you get,if its a different spec it will as per the website. It is the same shaft though,do not worry, its still a VS Proto which has all the nano gummings and all the rest.

It's definitely a new shaft, and new head - both untouched. The only thing that doesn't look new is the grip, but i suppose that could have got grubby from just sitting about in a store room for a while.

I was really just querying the shaft as on the Aldila website, there's not a 65g weight available. having looked a bit deeper, it does appear that the 65g shaft is available on other clubs.

Took the club to the range last night. It's ace If a bit loud! Long, straight and with a nice height. The lad getting a lesson in the bay next to me almost crapped himself when i took the first swing of it, he he. His instructor was very impressed with it though and thought that the whole club suited my swing very well. So, i know i took a chance by buying  a club of ebay, and that they sent me the wrong shafted club, but, looks like lady luck was smiling at me

Can't wait to use it on the course at the weekend.
