UST Shafts
Anyone got some recommendations for me?

Ok chaps, here goes...

I am looking for contructive feedback / critique on what I am proposing, or alternative suggestions from those "in the know".

I have a 14 degree 3 wood and a (new) 19 degree Hybrid.  I have a Steel Tri-Gold stiff shaft (Thanks EXMAX) in the 3 wood and a fishing rod in the new hybrid.

I am looking to convert the 3 wood to a graphite shaft and the hybrid to a stiff lo - torque shaft to compliment it.  Sonartec have recommended that I look at the UST Proforce V2 in 85gms or 95gms for the 3 wood and possibly 110gms for the hybrid.

Do these heavyweight (relative) shafts play "stiffer" than their lightweight conterparts?

I swing at 119 mph (max) with a driver - what weight shafts should I go with and what flex?

 (answers on a postcard... )

Dunc go for the 85grms in the fairway and 110gms  in the hybrid in stiff flex.

These are both quite stiff tip shafts that will suit you.  I use the 85g in a fairway and am not a million miles away from you swing speed.

Wouldn't say i have found them stiffer but they have a different feel to them. If you know a decent titleist distributor got and try the shafts as they can come as standard in titleist woods and hybrids.

Only problem you might have ia these are tour issue shafts only so you will need to find a ust tour shop to get them from.

Its not so much 'stiffer' but how hard they feel, the tip will play a big part

A 14* Sonartec with a UST V2 is a big beast of a club to hit,at least you have the swing speed. But with that club/shaft you will need to be on the button every time, swing speed alone won't rescue you.

Also, you may swing the driver harder than the 3 wood and the weight has more in common with how hard you load your transition. You can swing quite smoothly and yet still only need lower weighting at the same speed as a harder hitter, who needs the weight to maintain his timing.

If you are a hard hitter from the top I would go with the 85 in x-stiff,not stiff.I use a 118g steel stiff in my one hybrid, haven't a clue what that means for graphite

Thanks guys... WB, you have hit the nail on the head - I am in the same boat as you - I use steel in my FW wood as I have never been able to hit a light graphite shaft in them.

But now I want to get a consistent transition through the 3 wood and the hybrid, hence the question... I hope EXMAX reads this - he knows my setup and may have a take on things...

hello there,I was just looking at the site when i fou nd this thread and it seems to relate to a problem i had recentely.

i play off 6 and my swing speed is 113 avg i have a shortish quick tempo swing. i have been playing a titelist 905 driver with a 76g stiff UST V2. I was fitted for the club and have been hitting it very well.

About 6 months ago i was looking for a new 3wood and because the shaft suited me in the driver i ordered a titelist 3 wood with a 95g in stiff. I didnt try the club before i bought it. Once i started playing with it however my shots started to become inconsistent, it really felt like you needed a full out swing to get anything from it. a pro suggested that the heavier shafts play relitively stiffer than the lighter models also that the V2 shaft was tip stiff which was fine for keeping driver spin and trajectory down but not so good for a fairway wood .

I switched the ust shaft for an alida NV75 in stiff  and it has been a revelation it seems that i dont have to force the ball to get it going and the flight of the ball is much more floaty while not losing distance. I feel as if I can work the clubhead better. For these reasons i would be wary of this weight V2 in a fairway wood.

As for the hybrid I have a 19 deg Sonartec which has a stiff UST IROD shaft in it and it plays brilliantly

Thanks Clog,

Appreciate your comments.  I use a 94gm Stiff driver shaft (Accuflex ICON heavyweight) which plays closer to X than S - hence my Question about the weight "affecting" the stiffness of the shaft, if it applies to the V2's as well.  Would seem that the general rule is - Yes it does.

Do you still have the 95gm shaft that was pulled?

Dunc, unfortunately I sold the shaft to a guy who like yourself was a fast swingig low handicap player and had always used steel shafts in his fairways. He's won a couple of gross prizes in the club since.

I think the shaft would suit you though as you already play a heavy shaft in your driver, I had always played lighter weight shafts in my woods and I think it was the different weight that made me feel like I had to swing harder. If you are used to heavier shafts stick with them. Id go for the 95s rather than the 85x.

Thanks Clog,  appreciate your input on this.
