I am new to golf and I am looking to buy a set of clubs for around about the £200 mark while I learn.Any suggestions and offers (e.g free customisation) ?

i recommend you find a used set of Callaway X-14 or X-16 (known as cheat-sticks on tour !!!) on www.ebay.co.uk for between £150-£200.... great starter clubs with strong resale potential for when you decide to move on to a new set. Otherwise try any brand of "oversize" iron (PiNG, TaylorMade, Wilson, Titleist, King Cobra etc.) and make sure you avoid "muscle-backs", "blades" like the plaque !!!  good luck, Lindsay

they look great value..... but, sadly low on quality. At 5,8" you are of average height and i won`t bother with custom fit just yet. if you must have a "shinny" new set.... try Ireland`s finest.... "MD golf" oversize (preferably Gunmetal) irons with regular flex shafts. (try www.pricebustergolf.co.uk.... i find them very helpful).

Do you want new clubs or is 2nd hand OK?

If I had the choice and was not fussed I would go for a good set of second hand clubs rather than a new set of clubs which to be honest in 2 weeks will look like 2nd hand ones and save yourself some £ in the process.

You can get some good bargains on quality 2nd hand clubs if you look around.  Mizuno (MX-15, 17's) are a very popular brand with people on the forum and repeatedly come up in these threads as a good idea.  They are perfect for beginners.

I started playing with a set of MX-17s and played my way down to a 17hcp with them before upgrading.  They are very forgiving, nice wide sole and quite good design.  They give you a lot of confidence.  I'd seriously consider MX-15s or MX-17s.

Not wanting to appear that I posted about the MX-17s on purpose but if you did want a set I'd consider selling mine since I have now upgraded.   I would recommend them (and I'm sure other people can also do so) anyway and pricebuster or www.golfbidder.co.uk also have sets of these or other good quality clubs.

I would have a good hunt around, consult plenty of people and hit a few different clubs down at the range before committing to anything.  Getting the right clubs for you is an important step in your golf development.

If you want other advice i'm sure your local golf pro at your course can also help.
