Decent practise facilities
Where in Middx/West Surrey/East Berks ?

I traipsed to Airlinks in Hayes, Middlesex yesterday only to discover that their range is being refurbished (AGAIN !) and is closed until the spring.

Can any of the learned people on this site suggest a decent range in the Middlesex/West Surrey /East Berks area ? I'm especially interested in a dedicated short game area, so I can work on my lamentable sand play and chipping......

Here's hoping !

Cheers

Anyone ?!

There are so many expensive golf courses in East berkshire I'm sure most will have very good practice facilities - but whether they will be open to non-members is another issue.

Er, yeah - cheers !

Do I sense some slight sarcasm in regards to my most helpful post?! Try ringing round a few!

The only one I know of thats any good for short game is Downshire. A reasonable 9 hole pitch and putt course (greens arn't great though) for about £5 with a practise bunker off to the side.

Outside of private facilities (and not all of them either) the "practice" facilities are a joke in this country at a large % of courses. People lower their handicaps in spite of the system here, not because of it. Everything tends to be a compromise unless you are lucky enough to be a member at Wentworth etc etc...how we produce any decent golfers is beyond me and they should be applauded.

Putting greens get crowded if there are more than 2 people, are often different speeds to the regular greens, never usually have a 30 foot flat putt, practice bunkers (if they exist) are never raked and the sand (if it exists) is questionable, the practice greens are often a bit of mowed grass that a disinterested greenkeeper has stuck an old flag in because the greens committee told him to.

Most golf clubs do not care about golfers that want to improve their game, but rest assured the captain's parking space will always be kept clear - as will the pro's, assistants, president's, outgoing captain, lady captain, and more besides.

There is an abject lack of respect in most golf clubs for those that want to improve and more often than not the attitude is "you are not very good at golf so why bother practicing?", just keep the handicap up and win XXXXX competition. However, when someone shows promise, my goodness do they come out of the woodwork to all try and claim some credit and pat backs.

So, to answer your question, absolutely no idea and I lived in that area for years and know most courses/facilities around there pretty well, none of them are worth a look imhgo.

Practise facilities at the average golfer's private club, range or public course are a friggin disgrace.  Its amazing that anyone gets any good at the game in this country and anyone that does should be given some sort of medal for determination and perseverance.

How often do you hear or read "practise your short game" - WHERE??? Some over-loaded crappy condition "practise putting green" that is of no use to practise putting on, and you cant chip to anywhere. No practise bunkers, no grass ranges.

The  people that run golf in the UK are hackers, and care far more about the Captain's ball, the size of their car parking space and how many friggin societies they can crow-bar on the course. Just because most golfers are lazy and can't be arsed to practise doesn't mean that all golfers bask in the same attitude of mediocrity. I guess its symptematic of the UK as a whole, let's all be losers and crap rather than work towards bettering ourselves, almost like its rude to actually work at something you enjoy.

So in response to the original poster, there arent any practise facilities so you may as well just keep your handicap high, protect it, and win all the lousy club comps.

there are fantastic practise facilities at the Northwick park golf center and it has a restaurant and a golf shop although its jjb so not great . the range has heated bays , the short game area is excellant and there is a very good 6 hole course which is in superb nick ( all the holes being copies of famous holes)

Creo/rgjusa - why so cynical ?!

You are right though - maybe that's the question I should've posted - "Why are practise facilities so poor/lacking ?"

Ben Spain/Tilly - cheers for your input - Downshire is a bit off the beaten track for me but I may well pop up to Northwick Park when I get chance.
