Thinking of buying 9.5 degree with stiff Premium Aldila VS Proto shaft

£63.99 at pricebuster looks like a bargain, shaft alone almost justifies the price on its own, need to change my driver old taylormade xr 05 illegal and quite interested in trying a square head. Dont want to fork out £300 to find im not keen on head shape.

I know all drivers are personal choice but a little feedback would be appreciated

cheers

summed it up pretty much there Ant, shaft is a top piece of kit, and if it fits your spec then go for it!

I hit one out of our pro shop a few times and launched it pretty well!

What was the sound like Bill? National Club Golfer gave this driver a good right up but said the sound wasn't great. I quite fancy trying one of these myself but I hate anything too loud.

IMO Dave not too loud just a nice firm crack a good buy at that price, just make sure the shaft fits your swingspeed.

Hi Antney, try looking at the post in this section on page 8 from 21/11/07 - might be of help to you,Ive got a Slugger 10.5 deg with stiff shaft, goes great - ex demo £40.00 incl magnetic headcover, goes as well if not better than any driver I've ever had, including R7 superquad, it is fairly loud, but, arn't they all now?

Thanks have just had a look, i ordered one yesterday that has arrived today must admit the head looks enormous.

Will give it a go when i get a chance to get to range or course.

Got one of these through from Pricebuster on Tuesday. Had a £10 loyalty voucher so it only cost me £54. Went to the range on Wednesday after work to give it a whirl.

Let me say that I thought the square driver thing was just another gimmick. I don't like the Nike one and I've never hit a Callaway driver well, plus at well over 200 bananas they were not for me.

I bought the Slugger(great name) because it was cheap, the good write ups it had and the shaft was a VS Proto, which is a top end shaft.

All I can say is that if anybody is thinking of changing their driver or has to because of the new laws, try one of these.

If you put a decent swing on it, and most times I do as I play off 7, it just goes straight and long. Ten yards longer than the G10 that I tried out against it and much straighter. There's a great feel from the shaft and I always thought that I knew where the clubhead was.

It's in the bag for the season, best driver I've hit in ages and I've tried a few. Yonex Ciberstar, R7 425, Cobra F speed, Cleveland Hibore to name but a few.

If your not a golf snob, get a Slugger.

Yo disco dave, well said, I have a Slugger and, for the money I don't think it can be beaten. Sure  it's not a Nike or a Callie but who cares if it does the job for you?.

As you said Dave, depends on being a golf snob or not.

I just got a brand new slugger for £40! from a pro shop near me, it took a bit of haggling though. but mine has a grafalloy pro-lite shaft no the proto shaft? it still goes well. I have a 10.5 degree reg shaft, i need a stiff at least but i want some carry on the ball, i like to watch them fly. the noise off the face is pretty loud but i love it, when you hit it long on the range everyone watches it fly, its great.

I've been playing with my slugger - did i just say that - for a good 4 months now and it's a great club. Just as good as any of the more expensive clubs i've hit. Pretty loud, but no where near as loud as some of the nike clubs. Got mine for £40 brand new with the aldila shaft.

I'm looking for a cheap driver for my dad and my pro-shop are doing them for £69 but I reckon I can get them down a bit more.

He's high handicap (well actually - no handicap!) and has not had a driver before.  He's now playing regularly and his longest club is a 4i rescue so is thinking of a driver.  It sounds an ideal Xmas present.

Any thoughts?

Slugger, are you still getting on OK with the slugger?

Leave it alone. It slices just like any other I have tried. Check out e-bay for second hand drivers. Quite a few lads at my club have the Cobra m/x speed drivers, myself included now, they are great !

Every club may slice but I would have thought it's worth a try for your dad.  I know a few lads with Cobras at my club and they don't appear to be any straighter than other brands.  Probably worthwhile trying to get the highest loft you can of it though.

You could also try the Hippo Hex HL which has a 12 deg loft and with the standard shaft is about the same price.  That has a good reputation for the slower hitters.

UA... i am indeed still playing with my slugger... had fallen out with it for a while but that's because i had been concentrating on practicing my short iron swing so much i had neglected my driving swing. I've now rediscovered it and i'm as happy with it as i can be. I hit it just as long as my mates Hibore XLS. Only thing i'd say is i hit it too high. into the wind, this is a problem. Anywhere else though and i love it.
