 I played golf for the first in ages last weekend with a couple of other single figures and hit the ball well but my short game was a blunt but got better as the round went on. One of my playing partners said he thought i was in need of some new wedges, has anyone got any thoughts on good brands on the market, i have Cleveland at the moment but so many new brands out there, i did fancy a change if something comes with a good write up!!

 There are lots of good wedges out there. Possibly the most common are the Titleist Vokey wedges which run at about £80 each but are available in a multitude of different lofts and bounces. Good words have also been said about the MD wedges which are much cheaper and perform just as well but dont come with as many option...i think. Another good brand is Mizuno who are slightly cheaper than the vokeys. You could however look at some of the premuim wedges from the US such as Scratch. Completely custom, but very very expensive!  I use the Vokey spin milled 56.10 and 60.08 and find them very good and two of the most consitent clubs in my bag.

 I've got Volkey 54 & 58 and can't say a bad word against them - one of the most consistant clubs in the bag! Also heard good things about the MacDaddy grooves too, although you will need a new ball every couple of holes!! H

Just reading the reports about the Callaway Wedges, they sound great but pretty expensive end of the market, (the last 2 sets of wedges i've bought have been in the US meaning i was getting Cleveland wedges for about £20 a time!!)

Sorry, forgot to mention the Callaways are the ones with the MacDaddys!! Mate has them and they put ludicrous amounts of spin on the ball, hence the changing of balls at regular intervals!!! H

Thats fine, i did'nt like the sand wedge i got with my set of irons (Callaway X16's), thats why i bought Cleveland wedges originally but Callaway appear to have changed the club so its given me something to look out for, how long have you had your Vokey's for? I did buy a 60 Ram lob wedge for a £10 a couple of years ago and that for the money was a great buy too!

 I carry a 54 and 60 MD wedges. Fine for my level of golf and you can pick them up for £35. Fitted my middle ground stance of quality at a fair price.

Thanks, just had a look at the MD wedges, they've got a v good write up too, more my sort of price range too as was looking for a couple of wedges for £80 - 100 not just 1!!

 MD are excellent for the money, very suitable for someone who has not played for a while. You could well waste your money by going for something expensive only to find 6 months later they do not suit you.

Has anyone ever tried Ben Hogan carnoustie wedges, a couple of websites have deals on them and they too seem v popular with the punters, this shortlist of clubs is getting longer!

 I think that you cannot go far wrong with Progen oil can wedges. I sold my Vokey on ebay after picking up one of these. Generally they are also around £30 per wedge cheaper than the 'named' brands and can often be picked up on ebay for substantially less. Although after picking up a Makser C forged at a bargain basement price the Progen has been put in to the reserve pile. The Makser played about the same around the green but was a marginally better out of bunkers.

 I have some progen gunmetal wedges they are very good and good value too, I have 52 and 56* Think I only paid about £20 each for them. PM if you fancy them. I have big bertha 06 wedges now so progens are surpluss to requirements !

i played the progen gunmetal for a couple of years until i switched to mizzys mp-r range, great clubs for a bottom end price range.

 Why do you need new wedges? After a lay off, your problems will most likely be poor technique and lack of practice. What do have now and what are you hoping to improve with buying new ones?

 Another Vokey lover here. I have the 50/06, 56/12, 60/04. Great clubs and cetrainly worth the money when you consider the 3 of them together cost about the same amount as my driver.

 Hi Gilbo, The best wedges I've used are made by these guys Specialist GolfThey only make wedges, and maybe have a limited "off the peg" range compared to some. However, I think they are great value at £49.99 for a hand forged wedge. They will do custom jobs, and they’re great to deal with as well.I've got an “off the peg “ SW and a 60 degree, and I love them. Thinking about getting a 48 degree as the two I've already got really seem to work. I find them very accurate, and actually very forgiving and reliable clubs.Mind you, as with everything, try before you buy if possible. One man’s meat is another man’s poison etc.

Bought 2 MD wedges a couple of months ago. Cobalt 52* and 60* £40 each from my local pro. They are excellent. Have always had trouble with my short game and these have helped. Seriously considering replacing 56*. If only I could learn to putt.

If you want something a bit special, guy up in Scotland carries a large range of wedges from Scratch Golf to Chikara Designs. They are expensive but sometimes you pay for what you get!
