Anyone wanna buy a set of Mizuno MX23s (4-PW), I degree upright, half-inch longer? The reason ? I did the right thing and got them custom fit...at americangolf. Never felt quite right, so I just visited Ian Melville - an absolutely top bloke and pro at Rutland County - who informs me I am at least a white on the Ping scale (+3 degrees). And may even be a silver (+3.75 degrees). What's the point in people offering a custom fit service if they don't know what they're doing? Going back on Saturday for a proper fitting and then to Ping's HQ (although it looks like i can't get an appointment until the end of May!!). The Mizunos are on ebay with two Fli-Hi rescues and a three wood by the way. You live and learn.

Why get rid of the Mizies? Just have then adjusted, being forged they should be easily adjusted to the lie you want and you could have the shafts pluged if you want them longer. I did that with my previous irons, which at least proved what I needed.

Cheers Kentish. Off to get a hammer now!!! Actually, I'll give them to Mr Melville to work his magic. Mind you, the G10s are bloody good!

I hope you have gone back to AG and informed them of there inabaility to do there job properly.

Shakey why don't you take them back to American golf explain that you have not been playing well which i take it you haven't and advise them that you think you may need them more upright. therefore giving them the chance to do what they can to rectify the situation and you incurring no cost. If however you are just wanting to change irons get fitted by Ping and ask Ag to give you a good trade in given that you feel they have not lived up to expectations. Custom fitting is not an exact science and peoples game ability and posture change over time and you won't always come out the same.

Custom fitting may not be an exact science but there is a huge difference between 1* and 3.75* degrees, so someone is getting it very wrong. Lemme have a guess who that would be. Its coming to me. Not AG, surely not. Lets imagine the scenario.... The back room at AG.... "Hey, there is some geezer who wants fitting for some MX23's" "Well theres a set over there that we havent been able to sell, think they are a bit upright and long, flog him those" Seller looks at tags and sees they are 1* up and half inch long. Seller goes through the modicum of "fitting" for the customer. "Well sir it appears you are 1* up and half inch long" "Ah ok, when can I collect them" "We'll get in touch with Mizuno, should be here by the end of the week" Seller goes to back room. "Hey floged those MX23's to some geezer" "Good stuff, have an extra biccie with your tea".

Shakey Absolutely do not let AG get away with this shoddy service. I would demand a full refund for the Mizunos at the very least. If they don't play ball, threaten to write to the golf mags. A friend did this recently with excellent results.

Not saying who might be wrong here, but (from experience) mizuno and ping different ideas about fitting clubs. I go measured for both and was told that i was 2º upright and .5" longer by mizuno and 3º and 1" longer by ping. I know that the differences there aren't as large a gap as you've been told, but be aware that not all club manufacturers custom fit to the same specs.

This got me thinking that maybe Ping's standard is totally different to Mizuno's standard, so I went to their websites to check the difference between the G10's and MX-25's (MX-23's not on the site). PING G10's MX-25's 4I - 38.25" / 60* lie angle 4I - 38.25" / 60* 6I - 37.25" / 61.5* 6I - 37.25" / 61* 8I - 36.25" / 63* 8I - 36.25" / 62* PW - 35.50" / 64* PW - 35.50" / 63* Well there you go, I don't see anywhere near 2.75* difference there.

Your quite right....there is not a huge difference.... but there is certainly a difference enough to deduce that its total bollocks to describe any golfers general requirements in terms of +1" and 2* flat.
+1" from what standard???? 2* flatter than what????? A proper custom fit would describe a specific length and lie angle for each club in your bag and these would be specific to the clubs and shafts you are being fitted for. Choose another brand with perhaps a different shaft and you may well come out a different spec.

If AG don't do the right thing make sure you involve Mizuno.

American Golf is to Golfers what Jessops is to Photographers a waste of time for anything except odds and ends.

so shakey what was the outcome of your proper fitting session
|
 |
Firstly let me put the record straigh: AGD - oh sorry they dropped the 'D' cos there is no "Discount" to be had anymore is there - are mince!
Now that's out of the way. As a sh!te golfer whenever I've been through a custom fit session, they fit me for my swing that day.
I know my swing changes with the wind, certainly over several weeks/months because I'll have learned new stuff from lessons etc. So while AG are way, way off I think you'd find a difference between sessions even at the same proper venue.
I've just been fitted for some new irons but the gaff I'm getting them from will tweak them as and when I feel is necessary (and as they're forged the loft/lie angles should be checked - especially in the wedges - yearly at the very least, so I've been told), for the duration that they're in my bag - which will be 4yrs at least (based on my last ones).

I think you are all being a bit harsh on AG. I recently bought a custom fitted set of MX25s through the branch at Stirling and they sent me to the Muzino national fitting centre in Cumbernauld where they spent an hour assessing my swing. The only compliant I have is the time to get the clubs 2 weeks for an appointment, then 2 weeks to get the clubs delivered. Love the clubs.
