Hey Big E, don't count out Steel fairway woods just yet!! I do admit titanium fairway woods can give you that extra kick when needed but a lot of ti models are rather large in size for some peoples taste. One of the most sought after fairway woods by top notch golfers is the Callaway Steelhead Plus (circa 2000-01), a lot of pros still play this model and perfer its more traditional shape and light feel off the club face. I think a a majority of the golf companies today, with the exception of maybe Adams, have lost their way when it comes to designing and marketing fairway woods, Drivers and Hybrids are their priority. I know the appeal of putting the latest in golf equipment in your bag but the idea is overrated! I'm in the golf business and can get my hands on anything I want, but with the exception of maybe the latest wedge or putter, I perfer to just dive back into the garage full of clubs I have amassed of the years and recycle a classic out of retirement!

Thats what I have in my bag right now (5-wood), great little fairway wood, underappreciated when they were on the market.

I use the Adams Redline Titanium which whilst having a titanium head has tungsten weighting at the back so isn't too big and is a great club with its Fujikura shaft. Adams cut their teeth on the fairway woods and do seem to produce a good product.

Cheers Big Ears IMO you are RIGHT about the fact that the best design and performance of 3 woods has been in those produced 3-6 years ago. You are WRONG in my view when you say that steel is inferior to titanium. The very best fairway woods(as opposed to utilities) are inevitably small and shallow in the head to be able to pick the ball from tight fairways. Titanium is too light to be able to make a small enough head. My Callaway Steelhead 111s and the superb 3 wood are STILL those most favoured by Tour Professionals very few of whom use a titanium headed 3 wood-or any other wood. If the top pros rely on them they must be as good or better than any others. Callaway have even admitted to me that the Steelheads are still the clubs most popular with golfers of all handicaps despite the fact that the Company has brought out three models of fairway woods since!

Boanerges, totally agree with all your comments on Callaway Steelhead, my Dad got a crack in the face of his Steelhead 7W, he sent it back to them thinking they'd fix it, no they sent him a brand new Callaway Big Bertha Titanium 7W (now that is i call CUSTOMER SEVICE).

You pretty much cant go far wrong (IMO of course) with a Callaway Steelhead or original TM V-Steel, depends on whether you like a shallow face (V-Steel) or deeper face (Callaway). As a starting point, their performance and low price now is hard to beat. Of coure, all clubs are largely a matter of personal preference, but if you dont have one then give those a try.

V Steel II or 2008 Callaway X just replaced my F50 with the X and it's a really nice club.
