Custom fitting - guff or not...?

Anyone been to have a driver custom fit?   I was at at driving range earlier and they offer custom fitting a driver for £25.  This then comes off the price of the driver if you decide to buy.   They measure spin, swing speed and all that gubbins.

Do you think it'd make a difference?  I play off 10 and I would estimate that I drive the ball about 240.  My 7 iron goes about 155, so that's a slight indication of swing speed.  Do you think I would get custom fit and suddenly add 30 yards to my drives?  Or is it all guff and not worth the £25?

I think custom fitting can make a real difference if you goto a decent club fitter.  If you goto a sales person who works in a golf shop then its not worth much!

Maybe you could look at going to a club maker and have them make you a driver that will suit you, it may not be a named brand but should work better than an off the shelf fashion accessory.

Custom fitting from a decent club-fitter can help, but those range fittings are a total waste of time, you may as well just demo the drivers yourself and pick the one you hit the best. To paraphrase Mark Twain ..... "Lies, damn lies, and launch monitors".

Agreed, a fitting with a club fitter can take a couple of hours and may even end up with adjustments to kit you have as opposed to buying something new. I found it well worth it as I ended up with a driver that  I could actually use.

If done properly - a boon

If not - a waste of time or worse

Absolutely not.

Might add 5 or 10 yards length and maybe 20% better dispersion/accuracy.

Hmm.  I was hoping you'd all say "Yeah, go for it.  It will add at least 25 yards to your drives".  Not to be.  Nothing's that good eh?

My driver is a Titleist 905T 10.5* with an Aldila NV Regular shaft.  As I said, not brilliant distance really, but it seems to suit my swing and I'm pretty accurate (about 60% fairways hit).

I guess I'll just muddle on with that.  Fancied a new driver as well.....

Del, 60% of your handicap should be a bit better, just my 2p. Where are you missing?
Show/hide user stats

Yeah, it probably should be a little higher.   According to my stats proggie I'm missing 25% right and 15% left, so could be anywhere really.  Only 40 odd % GIR too, so my long game is suffering really.  Good job my short game is just holding together (for now).  Do you think my stats should be better for my handicap?  Average up and down is 35% and average points are 38 so I'm still playing slightly under my handicap (going slightly off topic here sorry).
