Iron Head Covers - a good idea or just a time-consuming fiddle and only for the guy with the immaculate kit who washes his towel after each round?

Seem to remeber we have been here before!!!

I'm that guy with the towel so the answer to the first question you know...wouldn't be without mine.

Neil ma man, if you gonna do dis then you need an M, C, A & Y wedge in yer bag.

Then you can rearrange dem covers and spell

Y.M.C.A.

Did have a look to see if I could find a previous thread on this but could't find a way to search the forums easily and don't have time to track back thru' the 600 odd equipment threads (not while at work anyway :) Maybe I'm missing the big button that says 'Search Forums' - wouldn't be the first time I couldn't see the wood for the trees (I see a lot of trees on the golf course). Wouldn't normally consider iron head covers but just bought some new clubs and wouldn't mind keeping them as pristine as possible for a while.

I like BM's idea but not sure how the members would take to the black leather/red indian/cowboy outfit that would need to go with them. Then again, some of the outfits that you see out there........

depends on whether you want to sell them in a couple of years or if you think you will have them long term.

I've used iron covers for years and whenever I have traded in my irons I am always complimented on how good condition they are in. Also means I get a few more quid for them.

Some people say that covering them loses you several credibilty points on the course but luckily I couldn't care less about that. If you are investing good money in clubs I can see no crime in wanting to protect that investment.

Only thing to bear in mind is that you need to remove the covers after the game if you want to avoid rust spots. This is particularly true for forged clubs.

I use iron cover for the simple reason it cuts down on the noise

Also if you have specialist wedges and want to keep in resonable condition i would have thought there a must/

I've just bought a set of Forged Hogan FTX irons, and yes I put covers on them, being forged they are susceptible to "dings" more than cast clubs. Personally I don't care about the credibility thing and want to keep these new irons and indeed the Hogan wedges I also bought in as good a condition as possible.

This subject has been done to death in various threads and opinion is, shall we say, polarized. I just dont' think the credibility arguement stands up, my CoverUpz look superfly!

If you can be bothered with the hassle of all the strings (assuming you dont want to lose the covers) then go for it. Personally, I think golf clubs should look like you've been using them. If you want a bit more cash when you come to sell them, get them buffed by your golf pro or local shop. As for the noise, try putting your hand over them when you pass the next hole putting out. Rough straw poll at our club - iron covers are used by about 3% of the folks there (usually the high handicappers)

...continuation
Who have paid a lot of money for their first clubs. And yes - I did use iron covers when I first started (as a high handicapper with my first set of Taylor Made), and yes - they were more hassle than they were worth.
Give them a try .....

Paul

That was probably about the percentage who had irons covers at the club I used to play at in the UK, but here in New Zealand that number would increase to about 40% of people at the club I'm a member of. Not sure why, but I for one am going to stay using them to keep my forged Hogan's from denting.

Iron covers only used by high handicappers? Not at my club. I would say that were I play the number is closer to Roberts than Paul's.

Anyway, I am not sure I understand the logic that you don't need covers as a lower handicapper. I play off 16 and there are lower than that at my club who use them.

If you don't like them, fine but I use them all the time and don't find them any trouble at all.

What causes me problems are regular sized wood covers keep falling off my small headed woods.

I wish I had got some on mine..my irons are now all bag chattered up.
