I use Pinnacle Exceptions for social play and practice. They go as far as most balls, feel okay off the putter, and I bought a few boxes cheap when they went out of production. Have tried AD333s and like those too, both much better than the old hard 2-piece balls.
However, for competitions I wanted a ball which would stop quicker round the greens and maybe give me an extra few yards. Having a slow swing and high handicap, I don't think I'd really be able to get the best out of the ProV1s etc, so one quiet evening I did a comparison test of 3 mid-price (£20 a dozen or thereabouts), 3-piece balls, a few holes and a session on the practice hole hitting 7-irons, then pitches and chips:
Titleist NXT Tours: lovely feel around the greens, stop on a sixpence, decent but not spectacular distance; but seemed to slice more, especially off my driver, than the other two. Would happily play them, though.
Taylor Made TP Burner: I know all balls are the same weight, but these felt like they were made out of tungsten. They're so solid at contact that you think it's gone miles - but walking up to the balls I always reached the TM before the other two makes. I also thought they sounded "dead" compared to the other two, and I couldn't stop them on a short pitch. I think a lot of this might be that they're tuned to players with a faster swing than mine, but I won't be buying any more.
Srixon Trispeed: As nice a ball as any to putt with, stops almost as well as the NXTs, goes slightly further and slightly straighter, and a couple of quid a dozen cheaper. My new comp ball of choice.
