Hi,

I've got a Dunlop MXII Set (got it initially to practice) and now I'm looking for a decent set of clubs.

Is Callaway BigBertha 08' steel shaft set a good choice?

In most of the shops it comes as 4-PW set so which Hybrid would you recommend to replace 3 iron?

Mad,

most people will recommend you go to a club fitter and get fitted for a set.

YOu may like the look of the BB but if they are not adjusted for you then you might as well stick with the Dunlops. Don't think saving £50 by going to DG or AG is a good deal.

I started with Hippo and now I play with MD Golf Forged Irons

alot depends on how much you have to spend. But I would recommend that you try all the clubs under consideration and then buy after you have tried...

 Mad,

I tried out the BB 08's and didn't like them at all! However you may well do so. I found that the long irons, with their stupidly wide bottoms, were great at the range but once you got into the rough it made it almost impossible to get underneath the ball.

Instead I went for the MX-19's. I have struggled with them as before I was playing with Mizuno CL's, which were almost blades, but now I have had a lesson and had my major flws in the swing pointed out (apparently!) they're starting to come good.

Try out clubs (at the very least on a range - not in the back room of JJB or AG!) and don't close your mind to any! You may well find that the cheap set of hippos, or Benross suit you better than the stuff from an OEM. If that is the case, buy the ones that suit you, not the ones your mates recomend!

There endeth the lesson........

Thanks BB

Oh well I took a risk and got the BB 08' after all (without trying). I'm still quite a novice player and I'm almost convinced that even if I try the set I wouldn't know which is better so I went for the set which had usually quite a good reviews.

But anyway, I had my first game with the new set yesterday and I must say BB 08' rocks! I played 9 holes on my usuall course and first time I felt like I'm playing real golf. I didn't have even one shot which went badly left/right (that might be just lucky day) and on the 300+ feet holes I took me only 2-3(iBird 4) +1(pitch) shots to get there playing funny looking club.

On the shorter ones 170f I used 7-8 Iron and the ball went high.. wow really high.. and straight.. almost on the green.

I always strugled with Dunlop iron no 3-4, and for me the big sole made a huge difference. Yes the iBird look funny but for me it's exactly what I needed.

I personally think that steel shaft works better for me than graphite (more control). It's a bit heavier but my swing is faster as I have more confidence that I will hit the ball were I want to.

Overall my whole game was around 5-10 shots better than average but this is mostly due to me playing really badly on the green yesterday. If I looked at the aproach to the green only I would say it was more than 1 shot on each hole on average.

Anyway I'm very glad with the new BB 08'! Works very well for me.
