Looking for a hybrid

I've just bought a new (wwll 2nd hand!) set of irons which are 5-PW. I've been using a 4 iron with my previous set with mixed results (21hc) but am going to give the hybrid a go. I did have a TM Burner 3i replacement last year but just couldn't get on with it so have steered away from them.

I'm not looking to break the bank but just wanted a view on what you are using and why you like it/them. Also what are your views on steel vs. graphire shafts on hybrids (I've always used steel shafts for my irons).

Also, you do know of any good deals out there at the moment??

TaylorMade Rescue Mid

This one works for me, and many others by all accounts.  Price makes it an easy choice.

Only advice I would offer is swing smooth and let the club do the work.  I have a real 2nd shot problem when trying for distance and if I get this out and just swing it nicely, I'm always delighted with the result.

Cheers for this AA but they only have a 19 degree and I'm looking for a 23/4. At the moment the Ben Sayers M8 at £34.99 from Snainton is looking a decent option.

I doubt this really fits what your after but you might find some cheap ones on ebay if you fancied one, anyhow I've got TM Rescue Duals in steel shafts, they're alright for me but I do blow hot and cold with them mainly due to my liking for the woods, and not getting them out often enough.

Likes = good quality club, quite long off the tee, easy to hit off the fairway and out of the rough. (except on a bad day)

Dislikes= hate them on a bad day.

Steel shafts= Like them as they feel quite similar to my irons, same kind of ball flight etc, except on a bad day when the ball flight is truely awesome.

I've played 2 rounds now with my Benross V6 Hybrid (23*, graphite Aldila NV shaft - but my irons also have graphite shafts). Started with MWT set at Neutral but found Draw better for me.

One word. Wow. Really, really enjoying it. Probably honeymoon effect, but it's going almost as long as my 7-wood (20*) and much more consistent. Haven't quite worked out the best tee height for it yet, but off the fairway and light rough it's a dream (which probably means I need a lower tee, come to think of it).

My main regret is not also getting a 20* when they were more widely available, but these people seem to have some quite cheap.

Cheers Jim - might take a look on gilfbidder too as I now a fair few who love the TM Duals.

What is the benefits of graphite vs. Steel in a hybrid... Espacially if you're uswing steel shafts in your irons???

I think its really down to personal taste as in how they feel in your hands, I found Steel more direct just like the irons which I like anyway, where as the graphite felt well more elastic and slightly lighter to swing which you'd expect from graphite, nothing wrong with that, but the steels were almost as light overal as the graphites which I didnt quite hit as well at the range, the steels seemed to be a little more consistent for me, kinda fitted in nicely with the irons so I  went with them and didnt bother with the extra expense of the graphite shafts.

Steel shafts arent that common so I dont know if you'd find many anyway, I also doubt if it would make any difference in the real world of golf either now, I dont know what the swing weights are for those clubs in steel and graphite, but that didn't make much in the way of any difference to me, me being a philistine.

If you find a nice club in either material with the correct flex I doubt you go too far wrong, you could always whip out the graphite and fit a steel shaft if you wanted to experiment.

Monkey,

I have a Benross V5 20 degree rescue and it's superb. It has an Aldila shaft (cannot for the life of me remember which one though, sorry!) which is superb! The fact that the shaft is graphite doesn't bother me as it feels different to my irons when I swing it anyway (I sweep it slightly more than I would with an iron - more like a fairway wood really - however that's probably totally the wrong way to do it!). The other benefit of the Benross (and the main reason why I bought it!) is price. If you look on ebay the Benross' tend to go for around the £20ish mark. You won't get a better club than one of these at that sort of price!

I also seem to remember having seen them somewhere for about £30ish quid from new on t'internet, but again can't remember where -

appologies for the uselessness, but it is monday morning!

I've got three hybrids now, Titleist 585.h and I can't say enough about them. They're quite pricey new, but if you can find the spec you're after on ebay you can get a bargain. Two of mine are new, one off ebay for £70.

I have a TM Rescue Dual TP with a steel shaft and it is a great club. I went for the TP in steel because for some reason I tended to pull other rescues and the stiff steel and TP set up seemed to eliminate this.

I know a couple of people that really rate their Cleveland Halos but I have never heard anyone who didn't love whichever version of the TM Rescue they had tried, I think most of my playing partners have one now!

One that might be worth a look however is the Wilson Dh6, a mate uses one and even when is having a bad day (and he has some really bad days!) this club still works for him. He has it with the UST shaft and it is a really solid bit of kit.

I have a MD Golf eql hybrid with a graff pro blue shaft.

A quality piece of kit for under £40 new off eBay.

That said my weak shot is a hook which isn't helped by the heel weighted hybrid design so I tend to use fairway woods.

I find my 7 wood Vsteel 2 is about a 4 iron.

Have you tried fairway woods ?

Show/hide user stats
Hi Pengwyn - the V Steel 7 wood is also an option. I hit my fairway woods fairy decently and to be honest, the problem I have had with hybrids in the past is that I have tended to put more of a wood swing on them than an iron one! Just a psychological thing I suppose!!

Well I've plumped for the Ben Sayers M8 at £34.99 from Snainton... £5 cheaper than anywhere alse and has had some pretty decent write-ups. my 5 iron is 27 degrees so I've gone for a 23 degree and then have a gap to my 5W at 19. No excuses anymore! The dream set is now complete!

Check out the Bobby Jones player series hybrid/rescue clubs. Highly recommend.
