Callaway steel shafts
Quality problem?

Playing at the weekend, one of my playing partners had a set of X-16 steel shaft.  He hit his 3 iron and the head flew off.  Apparently he has already had all the shafts replaced by Callaway after this happening with his original set.

I know that TM quality can be iffy but has this happened to anyone else with Callaway?

nope callaway always been good to me however was playing in a tie last month and the guy played with X16 graphites. he was telling me he played in the winter, swung a 5 iron at the tee shot, ball went not ot far - head flew off into the bushes!

clubs are probaly verging on 7-8 years old could the resin joining the head to the shaft be disintergating. Im not a clubmaker so purely thinking out loud.

only other time I have heard of heads coming off clubs are with really old drivers.

He hasn't been leaving them in the boot of his car in this hot weather has he?

Well, this was a shaft failue, not a glue failure so I don't think it's that.

The interesting thing is that this is the second time he's had this problem which means his replacement shafts are not so old, so he's not at all impressed.

maybe something to do with the way he plays? takes massive divots and thereofre weakens the shafts to heads?

I've had my X-18's about 3 years and no tell tale signs.  If he's leaving them in the car maybe condensation is occuring inside the shaft and they're rusting from the inside??

Had my Big Berthas for 2 years without any problems! (Rgjusa they live in the Boot of the car!)

Seems it may be just him then.  To be honest I'm not sure how he stores his clubs but I'll ask him.

Thanks for your responses anyway.

Sensicore inserts are notorious for introducing a rust collection spot in the shaft, but that is not near the hosel, and they usually snap just below the grip. When you said the "head flew off" I assumed it was without the shaft snapping. If he hits off range mats with the hard grass mat type, or has a punchy type of shot then that might have exposed some flaw in the shaft.  I am sure if Callaway had a quality control issue we would have heard about it by now as the X-16's are pretty old now. The good thing is that Callaway customer service is usually very good and will replace it FOC.
